Just FYI, business casual (at least in law) does not include jeans, but jeans are fine for ASW.twinkletoes16 wrote:TripTrip wrote:I actually googled that as soon as I read it in their A-Z handout. According to wikipedia, "business casual" includes jeans in academic settings.twinkletoes16 wrote:So ASW is business casual? No jeans?
Just want to make sure I'm not about to pack things that would make me overdressed. I've only been to Michigan's ASW and that was very casual- most everyone wore jeans.
So if I get a side-eye from any of the staff/students, can I pull out my phone and show them the wiki article as proof?

So now.. jeans or no jeans... this is much more stressful than I would like to admit haha
I'm trusting you Rink! And I also looked on wiki and am trusting the academic settings line

I really am wearing jeans. If you feel like that won't be good enough, wear a button down and stand near me so you look dressy. I'll be the guy looking normal.

wear whatever y'all want (short of, you know, your birthday suit). I think I wore jeans/boots/ a nice top most days. No one is too concerned about it.TripTrip wrote:I really am wearing jeans. We're so excited to meet you all! See you on tours, at lunches, and of course at Follies!
ETA: yeah, wikipedia is lying to you. Biz caz does not include jeans. ASW is totally jeans friendly and you should definitely not dress up this much, but for future reference: biz caz for women (I'm not a guy so I can't speak to that) is pencil skirt/ dress pants, a nice top, and heels.

I think most of us realize that generally business casual doesn't include jeans (a lot of us have worked in offices it seems like), it just seemed odd in the ASW brochure they sent out. Now we're all trying to justify looking like the jerk who didn't read the form. Or maybe we'll just more easily recognize fellow TLSers.

I have jeans but brought a dress and tights so ill only look like an asshole on one of the days. Hopefully my student host will tell me what's up when I get there
ETA I know what biz casual is, just thought it was strange for ASW...going to class in heels and a skirt seems weird to me but okay

Count me in for the "looking normal" group. Jeans and a hoodie for me.TripTrip wrote:I really am wearing jeans. If you feel like that won't be good enough, wear a button down and stand near me so you look dressy. I'll be the guy looking normal.

+1 to that. But I have also known people who wear a suit to class everyday. At a community college. It was ridiculous.twinkletoes16 wrote:ETA I know what biz casual is, just thought it was strange for ASW...going to class in heels and a skirt seems weird to me but okay

sigh... I wish I had read this earlier. I went out and bought a couple pairs of khakis last night just for this weekend (I haven't had to worry about dressing biz casual since ten pounds ago...). Now it looks like I'll be wearing jeans as I desperately need the validation of feeling like I fit in!

Actually, I'm going to take some fashion tips from the biebs. I'll be wearing some very formal overalls:

Packing black denim for the occasion because if there's anyone out there who takes pride in casually skirting the line between business casual and just plain casual it's this guy.

Courtesy of admissions:
It seems to be the most often asked question of the day. Nice jeans are fine. Jeans with rips or holes OR jeggings are not. Definitely no hoodies or t-shirts.
We're golden, haha

I love how NU handles these types of things.
Also, for those who are unhip with Director Decremer's request for no jeggings, see here: http://www.collegehumor.com/video/64204 ... h-jeggings

Does the "hospitality suite" on Friday in the Admissions office mean we get to have some face time with the legendary Johann?

Hi all,
I just got into the JD-PhD program at NU, but I haven't gotten any notifications about this "ASW." When is this? And how did you all learn about it?
Thanks!
