Hey guys, I'm wondering what the ED boost looks like from NYU. As a super splitter I know tons about UVA/NU etc, but I'm not going to spend my ED to pay sticker at them when I stand decent chances RD, thus I'm looking to see what reach school might be worth a long shot ED. I'm a 3.01 176. App ready to go Sept 1. Would the ED boost help overcome my GPA to NYU? Figured I'd ask the experts.

not to be a downer but i don't think nyu will reach that low for that gpa even with your lsat. and i don't think you have a 'decent shot' at uva with RD. tons of people have done RD with uva and failed.Clearlynotstefan wrote:Hey guys, I'm wondering what the ED boost looks like from NYU. Thanks for the input, I tend to agree with you as far as NYU goes just trying to feel out what the NYU experts think. When I said decent chance to NU/UVA, I mean collectively. Basically everyone with a 172+ 3.0+ got in NU this cycle, many with $.longlivetheking wrote:not to be a downer but i don't think nyu will reach that low for that gpa even with your lsat. and i don't think you have a 'decent shot' at uva with RD. tons of people have done RD with uva and failed.Clearlynotstefan wrote:Hey guys, I'm wondering what the ED boost looks like from NYU. i think nyu was quite fairly nice to ED splitters and most of em got in, including after waitlists. but there were quite a number of high lsat with 3.0-3.1 ED who were straight out rejected. except for senorhosh, he's a special snowflake i think.Clearlynotstefan wrote:Thanks for the input, I tend to agree with you as far as NYU goes just trying to feel out what the NYU experts think. Any idea if this will be email/call/sad letter of doom?

Basically the same pattern happened to a few of us last week and all were accepted. Also, why would they reject people off the WL this early in the summer?dsn32 wrote: LOL, I think joined at the hip is an understatement of how similar these cycles have been!

In as well.
Tempting tempting. NYU has been my #1 forever but I fell in love with Mich while they were deciding my fate.
Will probably depend on if they can give me any aid.
Congrats to all and good luck to those waiting.

Just from a mathematical perspective, you'll derive more utility from an ED at MVP. There are dings and WLs at CCN in your future. You wouldn't be out by default, but it's extraordinarily rare that they go below 3.2. You wouldn't have a great chance at MVP, but you would certainly be seriously considered.Clearlynotstefan wrote:Hey guys, I'm wondering what the ED boost looks like from NYU. Strategically, if you're not in love with any school, the best course of action may be a Sept 1 ED app to UVA (who, I believe, still guarantees a response in fifteen days). If they pass you up, you can send another one to wherever you want and you'll hear back before the end of the year, although it would be the most useful at M and P. I wouldn't count on money from any T14, so if that matters a lot, don't do it. This counts on you being okay with matriculating at UVA if they do accept you. You should be, because CCN more than likely will turn you down. Your targets should be NU (you seem to like it) and GULC.
But as always, if you feel uncertain, don't ED anywhere.

Thanks for the input. I do love NU and bet thats where I'm going to end up. I've thought about EDing to UVA which I believe would work out for me, but I'm not sure how much stronger it is for someone looking biglaw than NU would be, and NU might throw small $ my way (last cycle nearly everyone in my range got 30). So I worry about using my ED to UVA and risking having to turn down NU for equal prospects at UVA, although I acknowledge UVA's price would likely make up for whatever small $$ I could receive. For this reason I'm looking to practically waste my ED on a school I have very low chances at, but has outcomes that justify passing on these two if it works, and I guess the only option left is Penn ED. It's the only school an ED would at least have to be thought about, whose outcome I'd pass on $$ for.Monochromatic Oeuvre wrote:Just from a mathematical perspective, you'll derive more utility from an ED at MVP. Re: NYU C/O 2016 Applicants Thread!!! (Woooooo!!!!!)
before this current cycle, i would have definitely recommended you to do penn ED as i've seen that anything above 170 is a shoo-in if you ED. but this cycle i've seen 3.4+/173 deferred and waitlisted, i'm not sure whether its because of ED2 that makes penn more selective in its ED decisions, but i personally think the 170 shooin theory is bust. i would consider very carefully before throwing an app there, because chances are you're wasting the ED. if i were you i would ED uva if you really must have MVP, but i don't think there's a big difference between UVA and NU, both being > GULC. Hell, even cornell is better for biglaw than UVA.Clearlynotstefan wrote:Thanks for the input. I do love NU and bet thats where I'm going to end up. Congrats to everyone who got in. Would you mind sharing your stats?
Also, when is the deposit deadline for you recent admits? I think a few weeks ago admits were given 10 days to respond. If so, is it reasonable to expect more WL admits in the second week of June?

These numbers seem way high to me. For one, the info sheet that was attached to the initial email we received said that 'several hundred' applicants are offered spots on the WL, with '20 to 40%' declining to remain on it. So I was under the impression that the WL was around the 300 range. Second, it just boggles my mind that NYU would need to maintain a list 600/700 big. NYU admits roughly 20% of the applicant pool ED and RD, which comes out to a little over a 1000 students already. So why the need for such a gigantic WL? I just can't fathom a reason.toothbrush wrote:Much closer to 900. I believe my NYU WL threads google doc had ~90 people from TLS. Past data has suggested TLS is about 1/7 or 1/8 representative of the entire pool.alphebetagamma wrote:do we have an idea for NYU how many people are actually waitlisted and how many we expect to get accepted?
the waitlist e-mail said several hundred waitlisted? do we think this is like 300 or like 900?
thoughts?
7x90 = 630
8x90 = 720
So about that I'd say.
As for how many accepted ? I'd guess ~ 300 total. That mean 30 tls'rs ?
However, a bunch have already said NO to the acceptance off the WL so maybe this year it will be more. It's hard to fill a big class size in a down cycle.

Just wondering, how did you get that NYU accepts roughtly 20% of the ED and RD applicant pool? Wouldn't it be more? Cause that would be around 1140 people (the waitlist letter says there were about 5700 applicants I think), and historically NYU makes about 1700-1800 offers of admission, which would mean 500+ offers off the waitlist.atomist wrote:Congrats to everyone who got in. I think people in the HLS waitlist thread expect Harvard to make about 150 offers of admission of the waitlist, so I'm wondering if NYU would make more than that number, given the difference in caliber? I wish they would make the number public of how many people were on the list...
In any regard, here's to hoping they accept a lot more!
and congrats to everyone who was recently accepted!
