Weren't we supposed to hear back about student hosts for ASW by today? Has anyone else applied for that but not heard anything?

The emails asking for additional students to host said that the deadline to sign up was at 12:00pm today. I'm hosting, and it only took about 15 minutes after I signed up to get paired up, so if you haven't heard by now I wouldn't hold out too much hope.

Damn, this is gonna be a pricey trip then. And here I was finally starting to be able to save up some money.

The Hyatt Chicago Magnificent Mile is within walking distance to law school, has amazing rooms(absolutely enormous 1 bedroom suites that were bigger than any hotel room that I've stayed in bar the royal suite at the Hyatt Doha) and is pretty cheap ($99). Just settled down, Cityfront in Streeterville. Tylor from studentspace was very helpful, we took a tour to quite a few apts in the morning. Before I moved I already secured a convertible(600sqft/$1500) at McClurg for free, there was a promotion or the leasing agent was just being friendly, tho I didn't choose there. Rent is a lil bit expensive here. The overall cost in Streeterville is $1300~$1700(500sqft~600sqft) + $100ish utilities. Parking is insanely expensive, $20 for 1~2hrs, $30 or higher for 24hrs, and the tax! I bought a box of water from walgreen on sale, they charged tax per bottle! Anyone know if tapped water is drinkable here?

Yeah, the tap water is great. Get yourself a Brita filter and a reusable bottle. You'll be set.

The water is fine. In my building it's lukewarm, so I still use a Brita pitcher in the fridge just to keep COLD drinking water on hand, but it tastes fine. No need to go all tinfoil hat and buy a bunch of bottled water. (Did you know bottled water has lower--"lower" meaning less stringent--purity standards to meet than tap water anyway?)

I think the person who asked the original question is international, so that makes more sense. But yeah, growing up drinking Chicago's awesome tap water has made me really picky about water.

Inner city drivers, for the most part, are ok. It's when the suburbanites or out-of-towners come to the city it's a problem. There should be a separate license or a toll to enter into the downtown area.

I'm probably one of the least happy/most homesick here and I think it's a really great city. There's tons of stuff to do no matter what you like (the exception being skiing/snowboarding, and don't get me started); public transit is extensive, easy to use and about as clean/comfortable as you can expect from a city this size; the north side (where you will be 99% of the time) feels quite safe; prices (9.75% or whatever it is sales tax aside) are really reasonable for such a huge city; and it looks cool in photos.

The weather goes to extremes. Everyone will be happy part of the year and pretty much everyone will hate part of the year. (Most people don't like the cold extreme; I hate hot humidity so the summer weather here is suicide-inducing.)

As a socal native that lived in Omaha for 5 years, and experienced -30 with windchill, you get used to it. Just be sure to buy proper cold weather gear and its not a big deal.

It's all relative. Chicago is much less humid than say, DC. And the Lakefront's (Streeterville) cooling effect make it cooler than the 'burbs.

I was in Chicago this past week to visit the campus and meet with the admissions office. Weather was perfect: mid 50's and sunny. Pretty much NorCal weather.

I shall assume that Chicago is like that year-round.

You get used to it but it still gets old. It's in the 30s today and in my hometown, Phoenix, it's like 85 and it pisses me off. It doesn't get consistently warm here until late may and it gets uncomfortably hot by late June. Other than the weather, the city is amazing.
