Additionally, although we have interviewed about 1,000 students in the past few years, we are aiming for 1,200 this year.

If they only did a 1000 JS1's this cycle, the real admit rate would be significantly higher than 90% as some JS1ers who are also Y/S/CCN full ride admits will inevitably withdraw before getting a decision.

HLS also admitted only 840 back in those years when they had a ~65% yield.whatislife wrote:This interview:

You mean the admission rate for those who were interviewed would be higher than 90%. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Harvard's overall admission rate was over 90% (for this particular cycle, that is)?curry1 wrote:If they only did a 1000 JS1's this cycle, the real admit rate would be significantly higher than 90% as some JS1ers who are also Y/S/CCN full ride admits will inevitably withdraw before getting a decision.

I too agree that we may have many more people who are choosing not to share their fate on the Internet. But the idea of Harvard interviewing only about 1,000 people this year is incredibly comforting (the underlying assumption being that I would be included in the 800-900 admitted students).

Maybe. But we can all hope and dream, right? Especially when admission to Harvard Law is at stake. I say we can keep our hopes up until 8:29:59 a.m. EST on next Monday.AllHailKingMao wrote:Are we all playing ourselves? Re: Harvard Law c/o 2020 Applicants (2016-2017)
Just to clarify this point (and muddy the general waters further) it is in fact complete by 2/1 that is required for a response by 4/1. From the application instructions:KateMcKitten wrote:I believe your app only had to be *received* by 2/1, not go complete, to hear back by 4/1. I may know this because, as I went complete on 2/14, I may have had a meltdown and did a lot of research on the subject.Kinch08 wrote:I'm 100% sure that I saw something on some official harvard site/material (their application, maybe?) that said anyone who went complete by the deadline (2/1) would receive a decision by 4/1. It's clear from past years that anyone who gets admitted, regardless of when they went complete, will get a decision by 4/1, and that the only people who don't are people who:pkalltheway wrote: Are we sure that April 1st is the deadline? The website says decisions will go out by the end of April.
a) went complete after the deadline, and
b) get WL'd or dinged.
So in theory, there could be a number of JS1s remaining if HLS had an unusually high volume of applicants in late January/on February 1. Or if HLS had an unusually low volume of high quality early applicants. Obviously this would be a break from prior years. Paging dyebri and her/his incessant whining about the countercycle? Please note that due to the volume of materials we receive, it normally takes several weeks from the time we receive an application to process required materials and to "complete" the application for submission to the Admissions Committee. Applicants whose materials are completed by the February 1 deadline will have a decision rendered by April 1. Applications that become complete after the deadline are not guaranteed to have a decision rendered before April 1.

Re: Harvard Law c/o 2020 Applicants (2016-2017)
there's data on TLS that suggests that even pre 2012, the interview to admit rate was somewhere like 75% not 90%.whatislife wrote:This interview:

also note that's pre JSoban's tenure under a different dean and they admitted smaller numbers close to 800 or so. even with just 1000 interviews, the admit rate then would be somewhere around 80%, though i think it was closer to 75% overall.

Hi I am that applicant, didn't try to get fancy with anything, and pretty sure I didn't say anything dumb in the thread since I have hardly posted here.tartan2016 wrote:After reading the HLS blog, to me it doesn't seem like interviews "make or break" the decision. Looking at this person's LSN though, they've gotten into UChi and other similarly ranked schools with $$ so I'm going to assume nothing was devastating in their application. PM me if you're not comfortable posting.
Based on some conventional wisdom regarding admits though, including Spivey's blog about applicant timelines, apps which are borderline are usually confined to a separate pile from "auto/near auto-rejects" for late game decisions. So it's somewhat confusing that this person is getting dinged right now, rather than late March, or even waitlisted. Most of the other rejects on LSN have applicants with numbers below both 25ths or are massive splitters.
I'm just going to keep speculating here in hopes of getting to a JS2 wave/avoiding my own ding...
Edited in light of new posts: Do we think interviews make that much of a difference? People have also posted here that they had "meh" interviews and still have gotten accepted. Sans being an arrogant sociopath, I am unsure how large of a role to consider the interview here.

Re: Harvard Law c/o 2020 Applicants (2016-2017)
I think its pretty clear at this point that they are doing whatever they can to desperately hang on to their ranking.
This means trying to get cross-admits to withdraw by blowing back the timeline, returning to spreadsheets to try and optimize numbers by rebalencing with later applicants, delaying their interview cycle, accepting the GRE, and every other mechanism you can think of.
I wouldn't be surprised to see aid increases or a number of new students reduction at this point.
Darkest possible timeline has become the infinite timeline?

Sans being an arrogant sociopath, I am unsure how large of a role to consider the interview here.I did also point out that my undergrad was super non-prestigious. Transcripts look a little funny as my college was brief and split between two institutions, also a potentially risky PS depending on your views, etc, so would say I'm not necessarily the representative applicant of my numbers.

idk but i think at some point if the pole can include the wave date JS1 came in then that could determine total waves.
