Unless you live walking distance from Emory you would need a car. Marta has a relatively efficient train system, but it is pretty limited in scope (the trains don't run out to Druid Hills), so then you would be relying on the buses, which get caught in the Atlanta traffic just like every other vehicle. Even then, Atlanta is a pretty spaced out city, so for networking or going downtown in general, I would recommend having a car.Dexter97 wrote:1k a month isn't horrible...but how is the public transportation around Emory and Atlanta? Can students get around without having to rely on a car? It would be awesome to not have to factor in a car, gas, insurance as COL for three years.njkga wrote:I'm from ATL, and I wouldn't characterize the COL here as "sky high." Atlanta has a sky high cost of living, and it is only getting higher. Even with a full-tuition scholarship from Emory, it would still be more expensive in terms of total cost of attendance when compared with WUSTL, due to the extremely low cost of living in St. Louis. That being said, it may be worth the extra cost to you if you really do want to practice in Atlanta, due to the fact that you do not have ties to the region. If they gave you an application fee waiver, then what is the harm in applying? It doesn't harm you or anyone else that applied if you decide not to attend. Worst case scenario, Emory will just pull someone in off the wait list.mjs289 wrote:skyhigh4760 wrote:Are you actually considering going to Emory? Even if they gave you a full scholarship? I already have full scholly from WUSTL, so am wondering if I will have decent chance for a close offer. Otherwise, I don' see any reason to submit application... Any idea on what my chances would be??
I've considered about applying since the beginning of the cycle. It's just I got full scholarly offer from WUSTL early and knew Emory usually doesn't offer as much money. Pretty much only reason that stopped me from submitting an app. Even though I would prefer Atlanta over St. Louis, I have no regional ties whatsoever and they are peer schools. Didn't think my not-so-strong regional preference would worth the extra cost. Atlanta has more big firms, but I can relocate anyway. If they give me an offer that closely matches COA, then I would consider attending. Just having received that email, I wanted to see what my chance would be for money. But it seems like even if they offer good money, it's less than full and considering the cost of living, WUSTL will likely save me more money... anyway, thanks for replies people:)
I used to live (2 years ago) about 5 min from emory, and I payed under 1k a month for my very decent 1br apt in a nice area. Where would you find rent that cheap in other major cities? Not many places.

bdb90 wrote:Lived in Atlanta my whole life. I wouldn't know what the cost of living was like compared to New York or Chicago, though I would assume it would be lower. But when compared with St. Louis, it seems to be much higher (at least based on what is for rent in St. Louis on zillow). I was also comparing cost of living in Atlanta now versus 20 years ago when it was not so large, so for me it does seem sky high. I was also thinking about this person's possible experience after law school in either of the two regions, since both schools are primarily regional, and if one is looking for a house in a good area of St. Louis, they can find it on zillow for as little as $150,000 (and that's within a 30 minute commute of downtown). A house in Alpharetta averages about $300,000, Roswell $275,000; on average, if one wants a house for less than $200,000 they are most likely living in a less-than-desirable area or about an hour and a half from downtown Atlanta when morning rush hour is in its prime (7-9 AM). But yeah, if you are looking to rent a one bedroom apartment near Emory you could probably find something in the lower $1,000's.njkga wrote:I'm from ATL, and I wouldn't characterize the COL here as "sky high." I go to Emory currently and I have no idea what you guys mean about sky-high costs of living. Atlanta is one of the cheapest cities ever. I pay 350 in rent a month at the moment and while that isnt the norm, it isnt the lowest of the people I know either. Marta isnt great, but its pretty cheap and it'll get you anywhere you need to go. While I would advise bringing a car to campus, II know a ton of people who dont have one and they seem to be alive (as far as I can tell).

and that's great news about the transportation situation...I want to make sure I can still go grocery shopping and hit the bars without a car.
If you don't mind me asking, how is the relationship between the law school and main campus? Do both groups stick to themselves or is it common to become involved with the greater Emory community and participate in school wide events? Thanks!

Re: Emory Law c/o 2019 Applicants (2015-2016)
Like I said, I would strongly advise a car, but I know people who dont have one and they do get by without. As for the community, I would say there is a fair amount of chances for law students to get involved in campus though it is definitely underused. I've worked with law students and sometimes go to events at the law school, but Emory's community across the board could be best described as modular--everyone mostly does his/her own thing regardless of their division in my experience.Dexter97 wrote:$350 with a roommate?cecrum wrote:I go to Emory currently and I have no idea what you guys mean about sky-high costs of living. Anyone else who applied back in October still waiting to hear back? Kind of miffed because I actually really like Emory, and my dad is a Delta pilot so Atlanta is kind of a second home. Hopefully some news will come in the next week or two.

Yep - complete 10/22 and still haven't heard. It's discouraging because I really loved Emory when I visited. I'm right there with ya!BirdLawExpert wrote:Anyone else who applied back in October still waiting to hear back? If it makes you feel better, I applied the first day apps came out in early September and haven't heard a peep. It probably has to do with the fact that I retook in February, so maybe they're just waiting to see my new score.BirdLawExpert wrote:Anyone else who applied back in October still waiting to hear back? I emailed them about potential scholarship renegotiating (which I hear is impossible, but I want to know for sure) and haven't heard back... anyone else?

Schools should offer more than one visit weekend, IMO.
