Is there any consensus on what it means to get an interview? Is it like getting a JS1 at HLS in terms of who they give it to? Or is it just for most applicants?

If it is anything like last year, I would consider it to be just about as good of an indication of your candidacy as a JS1. It is definitely a good sign, but it doesn't mean that you're automatically "in." Just don't screw it up and you should be okay.

Guys, you can learn a lot from elterrible in regards of what NOT to do on your applications / during your interviews. He claimed that he was a 3-time Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics on his résumé to Harvard to sound impressive; he also told them that he wanted to go to law school so that he could legalize marijuana in every state after graduation in an attempt to make it sound like he has "big goals." Perhaps his biggest mistake was the fact that he wrote a diversity statement about being half black, which fell apart when he tried using face paint to make himself look "darker" during his Skype interview.

Obviously, it didn't work out to well for him in the long run.

I told myself when I applied last year in January that I would get a professional haircut if I got an interview from U of C. It never came and I was WLd in March.

Needless to say, my hair has gotten very long...until this week.


Besides the standard interview questions that they'll be asking, what's the procedure on Skype? I'm assuming they call you, you answer, and talk for 20 minutes and then it's over. Is this the kind of interview where I should try and sell myself or is the kind of interview where I just shouldn't screw up for about 20 minutes? How long do you spend answering each question?

(Sorry if these questions have been asked already but I am someone who struggles with rambling in interviews and I'd like to know how this works with such a brief interview.)

My general experience with LS interviews is that "selling yourself" isn't really what schools are looking for. They have your resume, PS, LoRs, and transcript that are all basically doing that already. Their objectives are probably more along the lines of (1) clarify specific interesting/unusual points on your resume; (2) gauge interest in the school; and (3) make sure you're not a creep.

YMMV, but IMO it's a lot more important to be conversational, topical, and a good listener. Make sure you are actually directly addressing what you are asked and be responsive and pleasant. Obviously you want to give favorable answers but don't like get on a soapbox and demonstrate your ass burgers; we already have Regulus to do that

I wore an Oxford academic gown (we call it sub fusc), and btw it is the scholars gown just to tell the interviewer that I am first class honours student.

Hahahah just kidding. Seriously though shirt and tie and jacket should not be either underdress or overdress.
