No breaks in school from kindergarten to Juris Doctorate. It's just "K12" expanded seven years.TheMostDangerousLG wrote:Sorry, what does k-jd stand for?Micdiddy wrote:If they want you and you're k-jd they offer you $$$ to defer for a year.Clearlynotstefan wrote:Pretty much.TheMostDangerousLG wrote:According to Wikipedia, 95% of the entering class has at least one year of full-time work experience. I just withdrew from two full rides. I feel immensely guilty but I'm so excited for NU. So glad they came through with scholarship offers before 4/1...

First, is it recommended if you are not satisfied with you award? And second, do they like you to just write an email, or actually attach PDFs of other scholarship offers? (Anything you may have heard about this at an ASW would be appreciated, as I can't attend). Finally, anyone know the email address this type of correspondence should be sent to? Thanks!

Undergrad and my graduate program seem pretty liberal (90%+ of my classmates and professors). I can't speak specifically to the law school, but one of my profs does teach at the law school and is a political commentator and tends to focus on conservative politics (DeSanto - he's awesome).Micdiddy wrote:First off, thanks for putting me straight WhiteyCakes I was definitely misinterpreting that. Clarification: I didn't attend NU for undergrad but my perception while on campus was that it was mostly liberal, however, not nearly as slanted as my graduate program.
Also sorry for the awful grammar, I'm too tired to fix it.

Two things: first, are you connoting something negative about "liberal aethiest"? that's the prime demographic direction of the country and already a plurality so I don't think it constitutes much of a dig. "conservative" is a far more problematic label. second, NU has a liberal pedagogy, but for undergrad at least what its student body and social structure represents, i.e. Caucasian dominated greek life & incredible affluence, is far from leftist or radical in any wayteiswei wrote:Undergrad and my graduate program seem pretty liberal (90%+ of my classmates and professors). I'd say the demographic shift will land closer to "moderate agnostics" than "liberal atheists".jbagelboy wrote:Two things: first, are you connoting something negative about "liberal aethiest"? that's the prime demographic direction of the country and already a plurality so I don't think it constitutes much of a dig. ^ I'm a liberal atheist... No dig intended.
And as I said, it was the vibe I got and not based on fact. Polical leanings were more apparent amongst the female population (slight majority at NU) but could clearly be seen from the male population as well.

On my first held letter they mentioned early January and I didn't hear till late February. I'm guessing they will make decisions after the deposit deadlines.nsideirish wrote:Has anyone who was Held heard anything yet? They said late March/early April.

I wouldn't say that NU (the student body, at least) has any particular slant. There's a healthy mix. People don't really talk politics at all though IME.Micdiddy wrote:What is the political slant of NU? My uncles were asking me last night and I had no idea.

Sure you're right too, I hope we land moderate to break endless partisanship -- trending more liberal in many ways than 20-30 years ago on key issues though (immigration, gay marriage, race relations, ect.), not to say we're all embracing marx and judith butler. and agnostic vs atheist, splitting hairs on degree of separation from an organized body of faithvinnnyvincenzo wrote: I'd say the demographic shift will land closer to "moderate agnostics" than "liberal atheists".

Re: Northwestern Law C/O 2016 (2012-2013 Applicants)
I would definitely say there are more liberals than conservatives (as you will find at most institutions of higher ed in this country), but the conservatives aren't vilified, nor do they feel forced to clump together with only each other as friends (I know this because I allow some to be my friends
). There's a healthy FedSoc club and no one pickets their meetings, and --gasp-- sometimes liberals even attend (for the free food, like every other club). I avoid the ones that I know are going to make me ragey, like "The Politically Correct University" (
) or whatever.
There are a fair number of conservative professors, or otherwise liberal professors who hold some conservative views, and there's a fair chance you'll encounter at least one in your 1L classes.
And I've been surprised by how little ideology comes up in class, tbh. We're covering abortion/gay marriage/equal protection in ConLaw right now and what little debate there is is entirely bloodless (pun intended).

I do not remember them giving us a specific time when a decision will be made... the only reference to April was the April 2nd deadline for continued consideration. Did they specify late March/early April somewhere else?

Re: Northwestern Law C/O 2016 (2012-2013 Applicants)
with regards to
The only question I have is regarding the Hold FAQ that was circulating earlier ITT. Admissions told me I would be getting an email following submission of the hold form with a link to the FAQ containing essay prompts, but I have yet to receive it. Given that they are going to reassess everyone in early April, I'm a little perturbed. I don't want to submit essays in response to prompts I received via an 'unofficial channel,' but then I can't really submit anything if I haven't been given the the link from NU.
Does this mean anything? Should I just reach out to them and tell them I never got the email?
I got the hold notice on 3/20 and called them for info. Between the letter and the conversation I had with the woman answering the phone, my impression is that they're going to reevaluate everyone beginning in early April and make decisions at that point. To me, this implies that we probably won't hear anything until mid-April at the earliest.nsideirish wrote:Has anyone who was Held heard anything yet? They said late March/early April.

I don't know if someone else has responded to this already, but NU is DEFINITELY definitely open to negotiation. I have friends who SIGNIFICANTLY upped their scholarships by bringing competing scholarships from schools like Columbia or UChicago to the table. It's always better to send an email with the actual competing scholarship attached as a PDF, that way they don't have to waste time asking you for it first. When I negotiated, I sent my email to Johann and Jill (Dean of Admissions and Director of Admissions & Financial Aid, respectively).testaker wrote:I'm sure the answer to my question is somewhere within this thread, but I did use the search function and didn't see as much as I suspect has been discussed here...Is anyone able to enlighten me on what they've heard about NU's responsiveness to scholarship negotiation?
