I just RSVP'd to go to the campus/tour class visit on March 12, since I won't be able to attend the official Preview Day. Did anyone else go on one of these tours, and what did you think of it?

So quick question- how did GW send out scholarship info? Is it in email or letter form, or both?

I called admissions earlier, the second and final wave of merit scholarships (not need based) are going out this friday. She said if you don't recieve an email this means you were not awarded a merit scholarship, however you can request your file to be reviewed again if you believe they were mistaken in not offering you a scholly.

Yes, according to their Preview Day email, "A reimbursement of up to $150.00 for travel-related expenses (airfare, train ticket, bus fair, car mileage) will be available upon matriculation in August. Please be sure to hold on to travel receipts so that you may turn them in during Orientation."Megstew wrote:is it true they only give you money for asw if you attend? bc i'm debating whether to attend

I been on a couple. Basically you meet in the admissions officer and a current student takes you around the law building. They show you the copy center, the library from the outside, a typical classroom, the moot courtroom, where the career center is etc. I think they all are going to be a little different depending on your tour guide. If you have questions they are more than willing to answer and its a students perspective which is nice
The class visit was alright. Kind of cool to see it in person but after about 10 minutes you've seen all you need to see and I felt like the rest of the 55 minutes I was just wasting time
Did you have any specific questions?

I'm just curious as to how informative it actually was and how helpful it would be in swaying my decision. I know it won't be as inclusive of all information and the Preview Day will, but I'm hoping to glean something useful from it.

has anyone started looking for apartments? I'm from out of state and the whole process is a bit daunting because it looks like things only open up around a month before people want you to move in. I can't be flying back and forth all summer to look at places and I have a job where I live so I can't leave before the end date on that.

Re: George Washington c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
I think one of best things about the visit is the chance to sit in on a class and get a sense of the dynamics between students and the professor. Clearly, one class isn't necessarily representative of all the classes, but I found the classroom atmosphere to be pretty varied at the different schools I visited. Whether or not that will sway your final decision may be another story, but at least you'll have a rough sense of what to expect. You also will see what the hallways are like when classes let out, see how busy the lounge is... all of those little social things that aren't the most important factor, but are nice to know about. Since you can't go to Preview Day, you could ask to set up a chance to meet with an admission officer, financial aid officer, or anyone you need to talk to get more info to help you get more actual information and answer your questions.cafecreme15 wrote:niplomo wrote:cafecreme15 wrote:I just RSVP'd to go to the campus/tour class visit on March 12, since I won't be able to attend the official Preview Day. Re: George Washington c/o 2018 Applicants (2014-2015 Cycle)
When I was looking for places last summer, I had a very short window to make a decision and limited ability to travel. I was looking at CL for rooms in group homes, and several people offered to do a Skype interview/tour of the place. Not an ideal situation, but you could look into that option. Have you considered GW-based housing? At least then you know what you're getting.spencer.414 wrote:has anyone started looking for apartments? The skype idea sounds like a good one. I'm starting consider living in the Aston but law school is already a financial stretch for me (and I already have all my own furniture) and I was hoping to pick up a few roommates so that rent would only be around $1000/mo. I keep going back and forth on whether to live with other law students. On the one hand it'd be nice to study together but on the other hand there's the stress (aka: "why are they studying and I'm not?! Oh lord, did I miss something? I may as well pack my bags now!") A big concern is that I don't know the area too well. I took a look at google maps and it looks like Foggy Bottom/Dupont/Columbia Heights would be the best places to live because I'm not about to make a 45m commute every day to class...unless I really have to.bethesda wrote:When I was looking for places last summer, I had a very short window to make a decision and limited ability to travel. With the metro you can be even further without having a 45 minute commute. bethesda to Farragut north is only about 15 20 minutes on the train then a 5 10 minute walk. Take a look at metro lines and you'll find areas. Can even see how long it'll take to get therespencer.414 wrote:The skype idea sounds like a good one. Informative? Not sure. But if you're seriously considering it then Id for sure go for it. I noticed a lot of things like having lockers, being crowded in hallways, people being social, etc but it wasn't anything that really swayed my decision too muchcafecreme15 wrote:niplomo wrote:cafecreme15 wrote:I just RSVP'd to go to the campus/tour class visit on March 12, since I won't be able to attend the official Preview Day. Currently live in the area, so feel free to PM me with specific questions about neighborhoods. But yeah, there are places that are farther away from the law school but are worthwhile b/c trains make the commutes pretty easy.
