Guys quick question and would really appreciate honest answers: I am not a NC resident but am an admitted student with a substantial scholarship. I also have about a 70% scholarship from BC. Other options include Minnesota, Wash U, William & Mary etc. But honestly I love Chapel Hill, love BC, going back and forth about this basically by the hour. All else being the same (cost of attendance) is BC or UNC generally considered the better school? Any feedback would be immensely helpful. Thanks

I want a shot at northeast Big Law, my LSAT is well above the 75th and i feel I could perform well at both schools. From my understanding if you are top 25 percent or so you have a great shot at Big law in boston from BC, need top 10-15% from UNC to try and get into the DC area. Im just wondering what is considered generally the "better" school

"Better" is hard to define since both are largely regional schools. If you want to work in NE, then go to Boston. UNC will probably not get you there.

I believe OP is from Michigan and wants to return there after a stint in BigLaw. Since BigLaw is unlikely from BC, UNC, Emory, or any school he had been accepted to, the general best advice was to go to a regional Midwest school. My suggestion would be to avoid a school whose typical employment outcome you are uncomfortable with. For example, in the statistically likely scenario that you don't have the GPA necessary for BigLaw, are you comfortable practicing in a small city or town in North Carolina? If the answer to that is no, don't go to UNC. If you counter that you are comfortable relying on your pre-LS connections in Michigan, then UNC is only the 10% chance at BigLaw and you are far better off in a Midwest regional school.

By the way, LSAT and uGPA are not sufficient predictors of law school success to base any predictions of your own performance on. Don't go to UNC because your LSAT is higher than most future classmates, just as you shouldn't avoid going to UNC because your GPA is lower than most of your future classmates. LSAT and uGPA are statistically meaningful only to get you admitted and scholarshipped.

thank you for your advice, i agree almost entirely with your sentiments. Though i do feel that BC and Emory are realistic options for big law, 30% of BC grads are in top 250 firms within a year, that is borderline top 15 level

But a BC/Emory grad is over twice as likely to not be in BigLaw as to be in it. With those odds, I think you have to seriously consider your comfort with the most likely outcome (not BigLaw). I said in the other discussion that I think BC is far more in line with your overall career and regional goals, being closer to the Michigan network. You also have the opportunity to be a native fan for the Patriots versus the Falcons, and that is simply always a preferrable outcome.

On a side note, I personally view law school decisions similarly to the NFL Draft. Jadaveon Clowney has a ridiculous ceiling based on talent, but his floor is a lot lower than Khalil Mack because of the work ethic issues. So do I gamble on Clowney and risk getting a bust for the chance at one-in-a-generation player? Personally, I would always choose Mack because I only get one chance at a first round pick. Likewise, I prefer to choose a law school based on the average or worst case scenario rather than on the best case scenario. If I were in your shoes, I'd prefer the higher floor of a Midwest regional to the higher ceiling and riskier gamble of BC/Emory.

But what's your draft philosophy? Would you rather have Clowney or Mack?

you are right about the falcons, i can't stand them. I got into pretty much all of the strong midwest regionals (minnesota, IU, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, etc) but i am a clowned guy. Kind of like in my fantasy draft when i took Josh Gordon in the 7th round (and was mocked by the entire league) i take risks. I would take clowned in a heartbeat. With proper coaching and guidance he is a once in a lifetime player, but the organization has to put the work in. That's how i feel about law school, if i go to BC/Emory and work like crazy, graduate top 10-20%, network, etc. I could end up with a job in a city far better than anything the midwest regionals could realistically provide. And if i don't, I head back to Michigan, work at a local firm, get involved in politics and work with our family business. I just want to take a swing for the home run "pick" though i know it is risky.

Waitlist for me as well. Definitely better than a ding. I'm on the West coast and this was one of the few non-West Coast schools I applied to.
