Hmm. Reading some articles by Dean Z, I think not writing one of those might have been a mistake. I guess that's the downside of not having a clear-cut favorite school. Every attempt I made at a "Why X?" statement sounded incredibly transparent to me, so I just skipped it. We'll see how much that comes back to bite me, I guess.helix23 wrote:Wrote Why Mich.shntn wrote:So admits, did you all write Why Michigan statements or otherwise incorporate a similar angle into your personal statements?

I really love Michigan, and wrote the Why Mich? but I think in the end it still sounded... weird. I meant it all, but it may have seemed overdone. Anyways, I am still waiting on an answer and very jealous (but excited for) all of today's admits!shntn wrote:Hmm. Hmm, mine wasn't anything flashy. I don't have any strong ties to Michigan, but I did my research and tried to say why it would be a good fit for me. Was it required or recommended? I honestly don't remember.shntn wrote:Hmm. Reading some articles by Dean Z, I think not writing one of those might have been a mistake. Recommended, I suppose. I tried, but it just read, to me, like a regurgitation of some of the bullet points in the viewbook. I probably should have sent it anyway.helix23 wrote:Hmm, mine wasn't anything flashy. I also wrote a Why Mich, but I have no ties to the school and have never visited. My essay was mainly based on doing research on clinics and programs availalbe (beyond name dropping) and explaining why my interests fit with those programs.

Don't you have a 179 LSAT? I wouldn't be too worried.shntn wrote: Recommended, I suppose. I tried, but it just read, to me, like a regurgitation of some of the bullet points in the viewbook. I probably should have sent it anyway.

My numbers make UM a reach, so I wrote the essay....but I made it less about UM and more about my ambitions in the law and why I thought UM was the right place to start. Didn't want it to devolve into a useless book report proving I could read their literature.
Of course, until I receive a decision, I will continue to second-guess this and all aspects of my strategy. Still "completed" as of today.

I did the same thing. It might have sounded transparent, but I just tried to link my goals with the programs that Michigan offers.RSterling wrote:I also wrote a Why Mich, but I have no ties to the school and have never visited. I hate that the day I submitted I was convinced my application was amazing and airtight. Every passing day makes me less and less confident.kingsfield69 wrote: Of course, until I receive a decision, I will continue to second-guess this and all aspects of my strategy. Still "completed" as of today.

For others who have been accepted already: did your packet come with a financial aid offer at all? I wanted to know if I should assume that I didn't get any since my packet didn't mention it, or if they do that later.

This is so true. The more I looked at Michigan, the more I felt it reflected my personal philosophy and approach to studying the law. When I hit submit, I felt better about this app than any other, including apps to schools that have since offered admission. I guess this explains my impatience in spite of having numbers that all but guarantee it'll be awhile before I hear anything.alwayssunnyinfl wrote:I hate that the day I submitted I was convinced my application was amazing and airtight. Here's to hoping I'm the splitter counterpart to your reverse-splitter admit.kingsfield69 wrote:This is so true. Unless someone says otherwise, I believe that they inform admits of a financial aid offer at a later date. There is also no mention of financial aid on the Admitted Students website. I feel like even if I did not receive aid it would say as much...but there is nothing of the sort.

I submitted my ED app on 11/9, but haven't gone complete yet. Does it have to go complete by 11/15 to be considered for Early Decision, or am I ok?

I think you're okay. It took mine forever to go complete. I'm ED, too.Paraflam wrote:I submitted my ED app on 11/9, but haven't gone complete yet. Does it have to go complete by 11/15 to be considered for Early Decision, or am I ok?

I find it fascinating that the same posters (all of whom are CCN locks and will not be attending a school worse than NYU) have to do the same mental hand wringing in every lower T14 thread. Doesn't matter how many phenomenal schools accept them, every thread develops exactly the same.
Not a criticism btw, just an observation. Honestly it's just fun to watch. Good luck guys, I'm enjoying going through this process with you.
Also: still sitting at complete. Medianish stats, wrote a weak "why Michigan," no ties to the school. Not worried, it's not even Thanksgiving yet.

For all of those with a below-median LSAT on edge and waiting, here's a bit of hope. I have a very poor score by Michigan standards and was recently admitted ED. I guess the rest of my app, including a strong why michigan and high GPA compensated. Good luck to everyone!

Just saw my acceptance on the status checker! Really excited about the possibility of attending Michigan!
For reference, I did write a "Why Michigan" essay, and I have some personal ties to the university/area.
