Re: Chicago-Kent Class of 2015 (2011-2012 Cycle)
I got an extension - still thinking it through. I will likely visit Chicago-Kent next week to see whether I can see myself spending ridiculous amounts of time in the facility and in the city. On this note - I will need to watch my back and hope I don't get shot while in Chicago. This is said tongue-in-cheek, but what is up with the crime in Chicago? I have seen so much in the news about Chicago killings recently that I have to seriously consider whether I want to move my family anywhere near that city.

it's really not as bad as the news makes it out to be. I've lived in Chicago my whole life and it just depends on where you live in Chicago. I live out in the suburbs of Chicago, but work in downtown walking distance to Kent. Maybe my perception is skewed because I live in the "burbs", but even while in the city it does not seem all that bad.

Chicago is the nicest and probably the safest metro that I've personally experienced, walk around the area while you visit, I've never feel "unsafe" in chicago.

I was born and raised in Chicago and unless you're living in Englewood (which you obviously wouldn't be), you're not in anymore danger than you would be in any other place. Chicago is a large city--there are thieves here just like there are everywhere. So sure, you do need to be a little more careful when you ride the train at night or walk alone, but that also goes with common sense things like not waving your iPhone or iPod around for the whole world to see.robocall12 wrote:I got an extension - still thinking it through. Don't give into the sensationalism that the media brings to this city. Yes, there were a ton of shootings Memorial Weekend but they were in areas that you will likely never step one foot in to. Chicago is an exceptionally beautiful city with an infinite number of things to do.

I've been waiting since 2/13 or 2/15...initial decisions..maybe we will hear something later today?[/quote]
Well, I called them yesterday, and was informed by the admissions department that he suspects there will be no new admission decisions sent this week. He also said their second deposit deadline is June 15th, so I am assuming it might be closer to that date.

Agreed. Chicago-Kent is in one of the best areas of Chicago. I work a block away (8 years) and just started attending my first class at Kent (thanks to the early start program). I haven't had any issues yet. The crime you hear about in the news happens mostly away from the downtown area. You will see how nice it is if you end up visiting the school.

So I applied around January 10, and my application did not move at all until I called them on May 8 and asked what was going on. The guy said he would move it up to be reviewed. So the next day my status said 5/9 Final Review and above it "You should receive a decision on your application within approximately one week from the status date listed below." Three more weeks went by...I called and asked when they might have an answer and this time the guy did not even offer to look up my account, he just said he didn't know. Is this normal? I don't even think I'm going to get in, so why are they taking so long to reject me?

Speculation is Kent is having a hard time getting students they want, rumors that they upped scholarship significantly when people withdrew their applications. So my guess is they are holding on to what they have (your app) and reluctance as they may, they just might have to dig into the pool of deferred applicants.Febby wrote:So I applied around January 10, and my application did not move at all until I called them on May 8 and asked what was going on. On the other note, consider yourself lucky, I applied in early October, deferred in December, and have yet to hear one single word from them. Other schools I was deferred at already rendered their decision months ago.

What do you mean when you say deferred? Did you receive a formal notice that your application was put on hold? Why don't they just make a wait-list?

Here's the email I received in December in pertain part.Febby wrote:What do you mean when you say deferred? Did you receive a formal notice that your application was put on hold? Why don't they just make a wait-list?
At this point, I think deferred is no different than wait-list at least for Kent, but that is just my personal opinion.Chicago-Kent Decision Notification wrote:The Admissions Committee has completed an initial evaluation of your application for admission to the Fall 2012 entering class. The Committee's conclusion is to defer a final decision regarding your application to later in the admissions cycle.

Kent doesn't have a "typical" wait-list bucket. Kent will defer your application for decision until a later date (which leaves you at limbo).
I am on the deferred list, have not received a final decision, but do expect to receive something this month, HOPFULLY positive.
So if you are part of the regular admission process, you "should" hear something back this month. That's my guess.

Thanks for replying so fast. So I guess I'm not deferred, just under-review.. indefinitely. Oh well, I'd be shocked if they flat out took me.

My application went into final review today. I have been complete since 2/13. does anyone know if this is a good sign for a positive decision, or do they put all apps on final review also, before making a decision.

What worries me is that they already have deadlines for deposits, yet we haven't even received a decision.. Do they just extend the deadlines for you if you are accepted later in the summer?
I'm also aware we have missed the ceremony for new students... It just all sounds so disappointing

if you get in you get in...the new student ceromony shouldn't bring you down.
From what I have gathered, if you get accepted, they give you an "X" amount of days to pay the deposit.

So I guess my constant pestering finally got me a response... they told me my application has been deferred and that the entering class is currently full ... told me they will let me know as late as August if I may attend this year. What do you guys think is the chance of someone who is deferred getting in?

Second seat deposits aren't due until 6/15 so even if their class is full right now, that may change. But they have already started admitting people off of the deferred list (myself included)mruszaj wrote:So I guess my constant pestering finally got me a response... they told me my application has been deferred and that the entering class is currently full ... told me they will let me know as late as August if I may attend this year. i'm surprised they told you that the entering class is full. I called last week and they said that they couldn't tell me such information.

Received the first email from Kent since December after they deferred me today, just to remind me that I am still deferred... quite beneficial to know.

Could that continued deferral mean anything significant? Please say yes....

So there are still hopes who are still waiting.
I don't know if I'd be attending though...
