Re: NYU C/O 2016 Applicants Thread!!! (Woooooo!!!!!)
I'd say more than a slight disadvantage, given some of the dramatic differences in GPA I see, and given the importance of medians to law schools. It's such a blatant case of the LSAC going "we are well aware that this system screws people over but we're not going to bother to make it fairer."

So much A+ hate ITT.
TBF guys, if those few and far between A+ grades (which are rarer than you think, since I've yet to hear of a candidate over 4.16) would not have knocked you past the GPA median (if you weren't already within 0.05 of the median), it would not have made any difference.

I have a friend that scored a 169 and has a very good gpa as well. He got DLS but no WL email yet. He was DLS at the same time as this big wave now. Is it possible that he got in? Anyone else not get an email yet?

Unless you go to a school like mine where often, every "4.0" was actually a 99% or 100%TripTrip wrote:So much A+ hate ITT.

I'm pretty sure if I could have gotten A+'s, I'd be over almost every median, and a lot of 75th%iles. It would have made a big difference.TripTrip wrote:So much A+ hate ITT.

Though I benefited from the A+ as 4.33 recalculation, I agree with others that it's unfair. I think if anything they should recalculate GPAs that used a 4.33 scale to the 4.0 scale. I can imagine I'd be just as pissed as some of you are if my undergrad didn't award A+'s.

But the medians would have moved up to compensate for the higher average GPAs.untar614 wrote:I'm pretty sure if I could have gotten A+'s, I'd be over almost every median, and a lot of 75th%iles. It would have made a big difference.TripTrip wrote:So much A+ hate ITT.

I agree that grade calculations should be fixed to 4.0, but I don't think it makes as much of a difference as we think it would.

I really feel for those kids who went to a school that offered no A+s/B+s but still gave out A-s and B-s

Same, but do any schools do A- without B+? Mine had +/- for everything but A+ (which has always felt strange to me in a college atmosphere, like their version of a gold star sticker).TripTrip wrote:Ha. That's my school. A-s but no A+s. Damn, props to both of you
My school was straight A/B/Cs because +/-s had no effect on GPAs.
After finding TLS (spring Junior year), I totally attempted to solicit some A+s and was successful 3-4 times but with 98+s

My school didn't have pluses or minus either. You just got an A (4.0, B (3.0), etc.

That would be so nice. The extra 4% required to guarantee my GPA won't drop is stressful. Had to maintain that 94%.chickpea wrote:My school didn't have pluses or minus either. You just got an A (4.0, B (3.0), etc.

Yeah, that's rough - that's why my undergrad says they got rid of the pluses and minuses. That, and to decrease competition between students.TripTrip wrote:That would be so nice. Hmm, I don't like that. Someone who got an 89 would have a 3.0 while someone who got a 90 has a 4.0. Doesn't seem fair to that 89er. I support the +/- grading and the corresponding 3.3/7s. That would be a more accurate reflection of class performance.chickpea wrote:Yeah, that's rough - that's why my undergrad says they got rid of the pluses and minuses. But that makes it worse. Right now, some people are getting bumps to their GPA as opposed to having it all equalize out. If everybody gets bumps, the medians all move up, and everybody has higher GPAs. If it's capped at a 4.0, then everybody's GPAs go down and the medians move down. Right now, some people just get screwed by not getting the same advantage as others.TripTrip wrote:But the medians would have moved up to compensate for the higher average GPAs.untar614 wrote:I'm pretty sure if I could have gotten A+'s, I'd be over almost every median, and a lot of 75th%iles. I agree that grade calculations should be fixed to 4.0, but I don't think it makes as much of a difference as we think it would.

I agree that it should be one way or the other, but I don't think it makes nearly as much of a difference as your school's overall grading curve, the difficulty of your major, etc.beautyistruth wrote:But that makes it worse. While I had a 4.0 at my school in my major without any A+s, there's a very good chance I would have had a lower GPA in a school that did have A+s.
