Re: michigan 2010 applicants
I don't know what to think right now. Someone with huge numbers like GeePee screams of YP and there's really no other explanation. On numbers alone, I feel sort of YP'd with a 172. On the other hand, the best school I've gotten into is Northwestern, so I can't really say I was YP'd at Michigan. Ugh, I just want to get in. What do you write a LOCI about when you used all your best stuff two days earlier on a late-addition Why essay?

Re: michigan 2010 applicants
I'm with you dude, were pretty much numbers twins, and I still feel sort of yield protected, especially when I see that it seems like 169/170 is the sweet spot for Mich. The best school I've gotten into is also Northwestern (truth be told, I think I'd rather live in Chicago/the really awesome neighborhood N'Western is in so I don't think we have it to bad lol). Even if you used your best stuff so to speak, maybe you can wait on a LOCI for a couple of weeks as according to the waitlist FAQ, it seems Michigan doesn't really dip into the w/l pool until mid to late april at the earliest, so maybe if in the next couple weeks you send another letter maybe not so much why michigan but why you still really want to go there they'll bite. Best of luck to you. I think that this year people in the 170-172 range got shafted in places they usually don't because of the huge increase in apps, especially at the top schools, whereas last cyce it seems people with our numbers were far better offLieutKaffee wrote:I don't know what to think right now. When/where did Dean Z come on the thread? I want to see. She seems awesome.rolark wrote:Haha, your not quite enough of a TLS junkie if you missed Dean Z coming onto this thread to discourage people from doing exactly that.roundabout wrote:Holy crap. Thanks, guys.
I just called the admissions office (I'm a little on edge, OKAY?) and they said "Oh, we don't encourage people to log in to the admitted students website until they get their letter, so I can't tell you what it means." Welllll, good thing I'm a TLS junkie!
Excuse me while I go freak out.
All the same, congrats

Re: michigan 2010 applicants
Remember what people call YP isn't just about gaming the rankings. Accepting a boatload of people you think aren't serious can also lead to over enrolling, which can be a big problem. Anyway, I don't really know if I've been YPed or not. I wrote an supplemental, but not a "why mich." My numbers are strong, but not crazy strong. I do think it's odd that NYU would look at my app, which would clearly be in their "adequate numbers, check out softs" pile and say "welcome aboard" and Mich would look at the same app in their "good numbers, but not outside of our profile" pile and say "waitlist time!"
Who knows, I guess. I think it just pays to not get your ego to wrapped up in all this.

Re: michigan 2010 applicants
This. Last year, a number of applicants who Michigan didn't think would enroll did, and the result was overenrollment by around 20 students. I think a lot of this is in reaction to that, to see how things shake out. Also consider that in a typical year, Michigan accepts 35-40 students off of the waitlist. This is standard, which means that there's definitely hope for those of you WL'd who really like Michigan. Because of the over enrollment last year, there wasn't a single person accepted off of the waitlist for Fall 2009 admission after late Feb/early March. One or two may have been initially YPed and got in, and DD got in with a solid Feb LSAT. After that, a handful got deferred admission during the summer, and will be Summer Start this year. That was it. The overenrollment wreaked havoc on the admission dynamics. Assuming they took steps to avoid that this year, which I'm confident they did, it wouldn't be surprising to see things return to normal, and the WL come back into play.Reedie wrote:Remember what people call YP isn't just about gaming the rankings. So yeah, for those of you who really want Michigan, don't lose hope. Continue to send in periodic materials and express your interest; I think you'll stand a good chance.

Does anyone know approx how many people ride the waitlist? The link makes it sound small (prob by design), but all the people on tls make it seem like everyone and their mother got waitlisted

My mother did get waitlisted, and she didn't even apply. Michigan is laying waste to everything that moves, and much that doesn't. We're receiving isolated reports that some rocks in the Mojave desert have just been waitlisted. Some claim that their numbers were too high--others just say the rocks didn't show enough interest in attending.nyyankees wrote:Does anyone know approx how many people ride the waitlist? WL today. Numbers aside, I find it interesting that my two acceptances so far were from my shortest personal statements.
I'm going to check out Ann Arbor next weekend and see if I want to write a LOCI or just move on.

The truth is those rocks were complete douches. They're lucky they weren't outright rejected and then pounded into gravel by hordes of angry Michigan [strike]cultists[/strike]fans.tomhobbes wrote:My mother did get waitlisted, and she didn't even apply. It's typically 100-200 to start, with not everyone serious (respond to stay on, but don't make any effort), and gets smaller as time goes on.nyyankees wrote:Does anyone know approx how many people ride the waitlist?
