Reserve is basically a waitlist. Hold means you're still waiting for a decision, which could be acceptance, denial, or waitlist. Traditionally the reserve is not utilized at Columbia.ru2486 wrote:sorry to post a noob question, but can somebody explain the difference between reserve group and hold? i really didnt feel like reading through 170 pages of this thread.

they may let in a few people each year. But yeah, it's not a great place to be.ru2486 wrote:so there's no hope? damn...snehpets wrote:Reserve is basically a waitlist. if we get accepted after being held, what's the shortest amount of time in which we'll be expected to accept the offer? i feel like it would be unreasonable to require a decision in less than 2 weeks, but...

It's not really unreasonable. Late in the cycle, some schools will be letting people in with about two days to make a decisionGeneva wrote:if we get accepted after being held, what's the shortest amount of time in which we'll be expected to accept the offer? i feel like it would be unreasonable to require a decision in less than 2 weeks, but...

I doubt it. I think the quick deadlines start in May, and progressively get shorter throughout the summer. I think that holds that get in just before the April 24 deadline will probably have until mid-May at leastGeneva wrote:Hm, so do you think we'll be bound to the standard May 1 deadline?JamMasterJ wrote:It's not really unreasonable. Accepted today after no word since applying in October. Was contacted yesterday by admissions with a question about my application (too specific to post). Once I clarified it for them, I was accepted a couple hours later.
Relieved to finally hear something and happy to have been accepted! Hoping for more good news for those who have been forgotten.

Does Columbia let the ED->RD people know of the final decision some time in April? On the letter the school only promises to review it again in April...so I'm wondering if I should wait for a decision, or call them to inquire...

I'm in the same boat. I spoke to an admissions dude and he said we will have a decision before May 1. Probably not. Short of a massive scholarship, which would be unprecedented with my numbers, it's no longer my #1. I might email the guy I have been in touch with there, but after 7 months of waiting I am numb.
