I have been regrettably putting off the negotiation process since I'm still waiting on a decent number of schools. I was hoping to hear back by now, but what do you guys think about starting negotiations without much leverage? UCI gave me 25k a year but I would want more from them to make it a viable option. Received the same from Pepperdine ironically, but Pepperdine would not budge with UCI's offer. Currently in at T-14 now (unfortunately with no money), which is one of my top choices, but now thinking I should start talking with UCI. Any thoughts?

I applied Feb. 23. So a faster turnaround than their 8 week guarantee, which was great!KGLaw18 wrote:Haha that's great! Just got in via email. I live about 30 minutes north of LA, so I'm definitely considering going to one or both days of the ASW weekend. I'll have to wait for my scholarship info before I get too excited about UCI.

Congrats to you all and thanks for the info on what sounds like a surprisingly quick turnaround! I decided to apply pretty late in this cycle after hearing some really great things so I'm hoping it doesn't count against me...sounds like I do have a chance of hearing relatively soon?
Fingers crossed!

UC Irvine employment #s are out:
c/o 2014 had 93 graduating students.
86% employed (80/93).
79 of those 80 are employed full time.
69 got bar passage required jobs (74% up from 64.3% last year), and the remaining 10 got JD Advantaged jobs.
10 Federal clerkships out of 93 (10.8%, down from 17.9% last year)
BigLaw up to 17.2% this year, versus 15.5% last year.

No prob - looks like 13 jobs are school funded. So UCI's "real" employment rate is actually 70% (66/93) but this is a super small class size. I hope they address the sudden uptick in school funded jobs at ASW

I get the impression that UCI is standing pretty firm with their initial offers. I inquired and submitted some very compelling competing offers and was able to get an increase, but it was <5% and it seemed clear from their reply that they wouldn't be offering more. Looking at LSN and this thread history, I may've been lucky to get that but I'm still going to ask again to see if I can't get them closer to Davis. Probably my own fault for applying so late in the cycle (and being a heavy splitter), but it's disappointing because UCI and UCLA are my top two choices and everyone always talks about how generous UCI is with aid, but right now my best/most viable offers are probably the ones from USC and Davis.

This is a little funny. When I visited and took a tour, they said that one of their main sources of pride was not employing any of their students after graduation.iguazu wrote:Yeah, lots to talk/think about.rion91 wrote:No prob - looks like 13 jobs are school funded. well they have no choice. I think the most interesting tidbit is the decline in clerkships which was their major strength.

Unless someone from admissions actually took you on a tour (because no students were available), all of us who give tours are student volunteers. We are minimally trained before we start touring, but I wouldn't doubt that some of us are occasionally misinformed about things (especially recent changes). I'm pretty sure the class of 2014 was the first class ever offered school-sponsored fellowships, so there's a good chance word was not out about them yet.zfletch74 wrote:This is a little funny. Yep, things change. But next year the ABA isn't letting schools report funded jobs as part of their employment score, so I am weary if that will incentivize schools into not providing them anymore. Sure, they are a tool to boost employment figures, but they're also a transitional safety net for students who didn't get a job during OCI and a crucial source of funds for PI oriented grads.zfletch74 wrote:This is a little funny. Re: UC Irvine c/o 2018
Current student. A few things:
1. Grads w/ 1-2 years of experience are more marketable than recent grads. In that regard, school-funded opportunities are a good thing. After all, employment > unemployment, any day.
2. I expect to actually see improvement in employment numbers after our ranking came out. We have been lucky that many employers trusted the faculty and administration to create great classes of lawyers, but having a ranking to back it up can only help.
3. I would consider creating a group for your class. It helps you communicate, specially while you're here in ASW. The FB class pages are also widely used for other social/academic reasons.
4. Have fun during ASW. Don't be afraid to ask questions--current students are pretty upfront about stuff. This is your dime, and this is your chance to get all the details about the product you'll be buying, so don't waste it.
Cheers.

Wow sorry to hear! I submitted scholarship negotiation with them last week and haven't heard back yet. How long did it take you to hear back? I also heard that they had a lot of money and were being very generous with aid. That's disappointing if they won't give much more because I would definitely SIR if they gave me more!spencercross wrote:I get the impression that UCI is standing pretty firm with their initial offers. Re: UC Irvine c/o 2018
It appears I was originally correct, and the increase in employment touted by Dean C was almost entirely due to UCI employing its own grads. You cannot count on this program being around when you graduate, so you should look at the non-school funded numbers carefully.BentleyLittle wrote:LurkerShirker wrote:That program hasn't been launched yet. No one has received any post graduate fellowships. The employment numbers for 2014 are what they are.rion91 wrote:Dean C was quoted here about a year ago saying he would start going the school-funded fellowship route to goose his employment numbers. Just in time for US News to start discounting this and the ABA considering reporting these differently. I wonder how much of this 84% is smoke and mirrors from this school funded stuff?Harry_Pluxen wrote:Looks like employment from last year's class is pretty good: 84% (FT JD Required or Advantaged) http://www.law.uci.edu/news/press-relea ... 09-15.html
That's up from 69.1% for 2013 grads. Not too shabby.
Has that been verified, though? I would trust that 84% if it was from the ABA or at the very least...LST.
I believe ABA numbers come out in a month or so. We'll be able to cross reference it then
"Chemerinsky hired a new assistant dean for career development last year and is preparing to launch at least a dozen yearlong fellowships that will pay about $40,000."
Read more: http://www.therecorder.com/id=120267082 ... z3U01riT6d
The class that entered in 2011 had 89 students, so I assume that is roughly the size of the class of 2014 graduating class. If there were a dozen fellowships there, that would be 13-14% of the class. So excluding those jobs, the real employment rate would be perhaps 70-71%, which would only be a slight increase from the 69.1% they had last year. Now that these school funded jobs are not going to be counted fully in the rankings, watch for them to magically disappear by the time you graduate.
