Re: UC Irvine 2011 Applicants
I'm incredibly disappointed, but I just can't find a sensible way to swing Irvine. My fiance works in downtown LA and his hours are already brutal.
I want to go to Irvine, but I just can't.
Good luck to everyone still waiting, and best wishes to you lucky dogs who go there!

Just withdrew (going to Mich). I loved the school on my visit though... was utterly blown away. Kinda sad that I won't be there in the fall. Good luck to everybody still waiting!! (and for those attending, enjoy it!!)

FWIW we do have students commuting from LA and Santa Monica and if you like to chat with them about the commute PM me your email and I will pass it along to a couple of those students. I know one is able to take the train and the train offers good reading time from what I understand. Another commutes from Santa Monica, which is less happy I guess because you can't take the train and have to drive. It's an hour or so to get to school if I recall, but she gets to school at around 7 and reads, so in both cases you need to be an early bird type.
I do understand you have to make it work for you and those you care about, and best of luck to you.

While I am sorry to hear that congrats on Michigan! Glad you liked UCI when you visited - guess the weather wasn't enough to convince yousanguar wrote:Just withdrew (going to Mich). Re: UC Irvine 2011 Applicants
I think I am on the cusp of withdrawing as well. Just got "in" at USC and am waiting on my $ packet. I was mostly sold by the ASD at Irvine. But I am 99% sure I want to stay in LA and although there is a lot of buzz with Irvine, you cannot beat the Trojan Network. Having talked with friends at various firms across the country, I'll be set with an 'SC degree, whereas Irvine is still a wild card.

Thanks! I had a few really good choices by most "objective" measures, but only a two that I really liked, and UCI was one of them (Mich, obviously, was the other). That's the one "withdraw-email" that I had a hard time writing.uci2013 wrote:While I am sorry to hear that congrats on Michigan! Seriously, looks like you had a lot of really good choices where you couldn't have gone wrong no matter what you decided. Good luck!

Okay, folks. You did a pretty good job of wooing me. Last Thursday was fantastic, and apart from the wonderful faculty, facilities (omg the gym. The GYM), and shockingly helpful career services people, those of you who are (mostly likely) going to be my fellow classmates are pretty damn sweet.
I'm not 100% yet, but think it's imperative to keep up the warm and fuzzies from last week. Who's committed? Other than you, jck
I think it's about time for an Irvine Class of 2014 group...

Anyone have any sort of idea about the waitlist size, class size or chances of getting in from the WL? My scores are a bit lower than the norm for irvine - I am curious if they keep a giant list.

Re: UC Irvine 2011 Applicants
I asked Estuardo that question at ASD. He said they admitted about 100 students, and the waitlist was going to be about the same size.dtl wrote:Anyone have any sort of idea about the waitlist size, class size or chances of getting in from the WL? Did anyone hear how many people applied this year? I wonder if their acceptance rate was as low as in 2009 and 2010...

Re: UC Irvine 2011 Applicants
They said at ASD that their numbers were the same. I have to believe they suffered the same 10-20% drop in applications as everyone else. Will be very curious to see the numbers for this class.lfp wrote:Did anyone hear how many people applied this year? I wonder if their acceptance rate was as low as in 2009 and 2010...

Not to mention the reduction in auto scholly. I think the numbers will see the biggest drop yet - hopefully enough to let my sorry ass in!
I do not think they are going to premier top 20 - more likely top 30. Then again that is still *huge* for a school this young.

I heard that the Dean of UCI had a mandate to keep the class numbers around the same (GPA and LSAT numbers that is), is this true? If so, then that might counter the "numbers will be lower due to no scholly" fear. Do others know more about this?

This is true, although I don't know how much of a mandate it was; more like permission.Metaread wrote:I heard that the Dean of UCI had a mandate to keep the class numbers around the same (GPA and LSAT numbers that is), is this true? I do recall him saying this at ASD. He seems like a trustworthy guy.Metaread wrote:I heard that the Dean of UCI had a mandate to keep the class numbers around the same (GPA and LSAT numbers that is), is this true? People giving mandate: "We want to be ranked top 20."
Chemerinsky: "That means we have to maintain a higher standard for admissions, even it means slower growth for our entering classes."
People giving mandate: "Well, then do that."

I would like to take a moment to say that Dean Chemerinsky is amazing. I just wrote him a long email, with questions in several parts (I'm destined for law school, obviously), and he got back to me with actual answers in 12 minutes. TWELVE.

I withdrew today.
Good luck to everyone still waiting, and best wishes to those who get to go to Irvine. Looks like I'll be going to USC. Not my first choice, but a good school. But I think I'll harbor a love of Irvine. Kick some ass, everyone.

Hrm - 100 acceptance and 100 waitlist... Is that around normal for schools of this caliber? At this point I do not care if I am in San Diego and already had my first week of classes. If I get a call from Irvine I am drropping everything.

This has me worried. Why did they increase scholarships? Is their yield of qualified applications going to be lower than expected?mybrain wrote:here!snichols16 wrote:Did anyone else just get their scholly increased?
