Alright, red is wrong on the pref. waitlist being ranked. I contacted the office of admissions a couple days ago (after seeing that quote) and straight up asked them. The response was, "The preferred waitlist is not ranked."
The letter also says, "We have a rolling admissions process, not a ranking process. As we identify available space in our incoming class, applicants on the preferred waitlist will be offered a seat according to when their file was deemed complete and entered our admissions process[....] your file will not be reviewed again. It is now just a matter of time waiting for a seat to become available. Our [PWL] is a small list; most commonly, all applicants on that list are offered a seat."
So red, it sounds like they probably misunderstood when you asked them for ranking (or possibly you're on the regular waitlist? idk).
Two other things worth noting for PWL people out there: 1) they start pulling from the PWL on April 15th. They try to get admission offers out to those people by the end of April. I have this from the horse's mouth, so to speak, as Dean Hose B-G and Dean Connie Beals have indicated this. 2) What I don't know is if when they pull you is based on when your application is processed by them (i.e. when it goes into review) or when they send out the PWL offer to you, or when you confirm for PWL. Edit: Oh, and they're already considering which PWL candidates to draw earliest, with the expectation that they'll have seats... or so I've heard.
The first wave of PWLs seems to have gone out in February around the 18th; that's when people began reporting receiving them (those people are probably near the top of the PWL, if it's ordered in any way at all). PWL offers continued for a while, but they've trickled off. UMaryland seems to have a regular waitlist of a few hundred people, and I suspect from what I've gathered across the internet that the PWL is probably limited to a few tens of people.
If anyone knows anything else, I'd appreciate a chance to refine my analysis.

Re: Maryland 2011 Applicants
I have the same thing for 4/7... wouldn't they e-mail a "accepted" since deposit deadlines are approaching? Can I just assume it is a rejection or a waitlist?ek436387 wrote:My application status also just changed to "decision mailed" on 4/5.....anyone else?
Update: I just looked back in the thread and someone said everyone gets this no matter what the decision is. So I guess it is just a waiting game - and Maryland is soooo far away. I'll know in like a week!

Not necessarily. I don't think many admitted students in their right mind would pick Maryland considering it'll prob be at sticker.hope11 wrote:so is it safe to assume people NOT in the preferred list are screwed?

Just withdrew; I had been offered a half tuition Legal Scholars scholarship. Wasn't an easy decision. =(
Hope someone benefits from this.

Re: Maryland 2011 Applicants
I haven't heard back yet...but I did apply late, on March 23. Is anyone still getting in this late, or did I just shoot myself in the foot applying so late in the game??
My LSAT was 159 and undergrad GPA 3.4. However, I applied to joint degree program for the MSW/JD. I got into the MSW program and have already completed a year at another school (transferring with a 4.0 in that program). Do you think that helps or hurts??
Do any of you have numbers similar to mine? Did you get in?
Waiting sucks!

Ditto. In the past few years people on the regular waitlist have been admitted, usually in mid-to-late May and later. If you're on the regular list, and you really want to boost your chances of admission as much as possible, I recommend writing LOCI and visiting.ran12 wrote:Not necessarily. Re: Maryland 2011 Applicants
has anyone found out what the total cost of attendance is at Maryland? I'm a little uneasy about the fact that I can't seem to find this information on their site and it's not readily available somewhere...
Also, anyone have any information on how easy it is to establish in state residency for tuition?

I got my acceptance in the mail today. Really a nice confidence booster but I'll likely withdraw in the coming days.
Lsatextreme: In the packet I received today there is information regarding estimated expenses. For in-state: $52,944 and out of state: $65,422

That is the total estimated expense. Actual tuition is about 23k in-state, and 35k out of state.Mattfl88 wrote:I got my acceptance in the mail today. Really a nice confidence booster but I'll likely withdraw in the coming days.

Re: Maryland 2011 Applicants
Hi all. I know this might seem like a silly question, but why do none of UMD's mails tell you how to pay your seat deposit? I study in Europe, and was hoping that a simple credit card payment would do. A check won't work, and stuffing cash into an envelope seems silly. I got accepted a couple weeks ago.
Also, I'm awaiting three decisions and two waitlists, but between American and UMD - opinions?
Many thanks! Again, sorry in advance if I'm being a moron re payment.

Withdrew today. Also, seems like Maryland is one of the few schools that require that the actual deposit be in their office by end of business at the deadline. Spots might open up for the waitlist by virtue of this.

From what I've noticed it is but it's best to look at the specific school's policy.lsatextreme wrote:for most other schools, is it actually just postmarked?ran12 wrote:Withdrew today. Re: Maryland 2011 Applicants
@ach24: Isn't the seat deposit deadline tomorrow though (for the initial reservation)? It seems pretty strange that they'd send you the scholarship this late, unless you already sent in the initial deposit and were just waiting on deciding whether to withdraw or not... (Disclaimer: Not sure when the actual deposit deadline is this year). The application deadline was April 1st, as it was in year's past, and from my convos with the Deans I assume the deposit deadline is the 15th (as it was last year). So... I guess the question is, are they giving you one day to submit your reservation and grab the scholarship, cause that's just a little shady, imo.
I also recall it's a "received by" not "post-marked by" date, which I presume is still the same this year?
