Re: Cornell waiting room
Its official, "After careful consideration...I am sorry to inform you etc." They do suggest that if I really want to go there I should apply for transfer after my 1st year, yadda yadda yadda. Good Luck to everyone else. BTW condolences are not necessary, I checked my status checker one last time before I sent an email to withdraw from consideration. I got in to a somewhat lower ranked school (Top 30), with a much lower sticker price and scholarship. So I didn't the withdrawal just to see it I had gotten in. Again good luck to everyone else.

Nah, I'm in Kuwait right now so it takes a little while for mail to catch up. The decision date was on the tenth, so I figure it got mailed out then and got here yesterday on the 19th. My wife wanted me to wait on my acceptance at William & Mary, because she really liked Cornell, and I told her with my numbers I shouldn't have even applied. It worked out though. Sticker on in-state on W&M is 21K a year, my GI Bill cover most of that.

I did an independent study this past semester on the "U.S. homefront during war" and we mostly focused on WWII. It was a history class and although I'm an econ major I really enjoyed it. Anyway, one of the books I had to read was Suzanne Mettler's "Soldiers to Citizens: The G.I. Bill and the Making of the Greatest Generation." If you have some time off when you get back you might want to give it a read. Very interesting. Good luck @ William & Mary!

Do we have any idea how many people are asked to apply for the Dean's Scholarship?
Trying to get a sense of the odds.
Cheers!

+1, I would like to know this as well. Seems like quite a few TLSers have been told they were under consideration.tamlyric wrote:Do we have any idea how many people are asked to apply for the Dean's Scholarship?

Re: Cornell waiting room
Well, we've seen about 15-20 different people mention it on TLS. Obviously, that group is limited to those who are on TLS and who don't mind sharing information about their application status. My guess--and it's only a guess--is that about 40-50 applicants were offered the opportunity to apply for the Dean's Scholarship. And that's just from the EA pool. I am sure there will be at least a few others from the RD pool who will also be asked to apply for the scholarship.tamlyric wrote:Do we have any idea how many people are asked to apply for the Dean's Scholarship?

So, at the end of the day, I'm guessing it's going to be something like 60-100 invitations (a big range, I realize) for the 10 scholarships. Of those 60-100, there will probably be several who won't bother to apply because they have already decided to attend higher ranked schools.
All of the above is speculation. If anyone has a more informed perspective, it would be great to hear it.

As conjecture goes, this seems pretty reasonable to me.Dignan wrote:Well, we've seen about 15-20 different people mention it on TLS. Here's another question. Is it fair to assume that ~10 people will ultimately get the scholarship? Or should we only assume that ~10 people will be offered the scholarship?

Re: Cornell waiting room
I've been wondering about that as well. I think it would almost have to be close to 10 people that get the scholarship, since it would be safe to assume that a lot of people would turn it down to attend higher ranked schools. Meaning that if they offered only 10, probably less than 5 would be awarded (which seems unlikely based on LSN, etc). My guess is that 100 or so people are offered the chance to apple for the scholarship, but I really have no idea.tamlyric wrote:As conjecture goes, this seems pretty reasonable to me.Dignan wrote:Well, we've seen about 15-20 different people mention it on TLS. Still EAC 10/1 . . . is there anyone else still EAC from October? Any speculation on whether it's good or bad to not have heard yet after applying so early. Not expecting an acceptance because it's a longshot for my numbers, but curious why they wouldn't have rejected me by now if they were going too.

Re: Cornell waiting room
You aren't a terrible longshot. I think you will probably get EA deffered and WL/In during the regular cycle. They admitted a handful of 4.0/165's last cycle, and your UCLA acceptance tells me you probably have other things going for you above the numbers.amputatedbrain wrote:Still EAC 10/1 . . . is there anyone else still EAC from October?
