Lol some truth, but mostly spin.

I'd estimate probably 2/3 of our class is interested in biglaw work. Anywhere from "biglaw or bust", to people who would take it if available, but are fine if not.

The true part is that not everyone will apply to Chi and NYC. I for one am not applying to NYC OCI because I am not moving to NYC after school. Also all our OCI stuff is pre-select, meaning the firms pick who they want to interview. So the less people that apply, obviously it gives you a better chance of getting a screener (first interview).

The spin part is that lots of people will apply to those cities. And even if not many did, it wouldn't really allow you to stand out. Chi has UChi, NU, ND, Illinios, Iowa grads all applying there. Even if you are the only WashU kid to apply, if they don't like you, they can just hire another UChi kid. With NYC, certain schools (Columbia, Harvard, penn, etc.) they set aside a certain number of spots for. From what I've heard, they don't set aside any specifically for us. Now if your grades are solid and you interview well, you'll have opportunities, but less WashU kids applying isn't really going to help you much other than getting screeners through pre-select.

Not trying to be doom and gloom or anything, biglaw in those cities, particularly NYC, are very doable here if you have the grades, but there were definitely giving you some spin, and most people interested in biglaw apply to those cities.

Let's Get it: I appreciate that. I'm just glad to hear WUSTL's not seen as 'Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn out on the Miss. River'. It seems like it's just right for someone who's okay with not getting biglaw but would take the unlikely odds given the COA

Yeah I'd say that's exactly right. You don't want to come here needing to get biglaw, but it's still a great option for lots of people because of a pretty solid national reputation and the COA. I think we are almost always a better option with $$$ than a lower T14 with no/little $.

Had a deposit extension until early next week, and got a nice bump to my scholarship to almost full tuition. I'm still on the fence about going. I'm either attending Wash U or not going at all. Anybody have any opinions on the likelihood of an outcome better than my current unfulfilling teaching career. I wholeheartedly want to go to law school and become a lawyer, but having a hard time giving up a guaranteed job making around 40K, even though it's one I hate. Not looking for big law, I'd really like a small criminal practice or DA would be my dream job. I guess I'm asking from those who might know, are the ones getting no job out of Wash U putting themselves out of a job somehow or are good candidates just striking out. Sorry if this is a dumb question; I'm just stressed about my decision and don't want to screw up.

Can someone tell me how easy it is to be recruited by Southern firms from Wash U?

I'm from The South, although I'm not the perfect person to ask because I don't want to go back. There aren't many southerners here at all, nor many people trying to get there. You aren't going to get "recruited" by any southern firms. You can get there, but CSO isn't going to be much help, so you should just expect to do the legwork (read: mass mailing) on your own.

Lol LGI was a little off-base with what he said about me (though we've talked a lot and I could see why he would assume), but I am happy with my decision to attend WUSTL. My biggest complaint is that I hate STL, and I have talked about this here extensively so you can search through this thread if you'd like to know why. I will hopefully be in a position like sublime and am in reach of the outcome I want, so if I get that outcome I definitely won't have any regrets with attending, but I took a big gamble and I wouldn't necessarily advise it depending on your risk-aversion and goals.

We do alright in TX if you have good grades, but that's all I know about. Sublime can speak more about targeting a small, southern, home market though.

I love the small cult of washu people year after year who shoot for NYC biglaw and get it. For the price it really is like winning the jackpot. Hopefully I can join the ranks of sublime and scotti and be in good position.

No Mandelker, Flagg, or Konig? Good for you, 0L's. Although no Tamanaha or Kim in the fall either.

Section B is the clear winner. Best profs, no class on Friday's, and done by 2:30 every day. . That's the section I would be hoping for if I were you guys.

I'll give advice for the profs I've had when you get section assignments, if there is interest in that.

Edit: sorry scott, didn't mean to speak for you. lol

Flagg retired and Konig is writing a book. All of you should hope that you don't have torts in the Fall, because any chance at having Tamanaha in the spring is golden.

And no worries bro, again, you weren't off-base just reached the wrong conclusion.

Ah gotcha. Well they are still lucky af that Manelker isn't teaching property in the fall because he is the worst, and will never retire. Goldwasser retired too, which sucks. I know Tamanaha gets all the love, but I had her for torts and loved her.

Tamanaha is so cool that someone paid to go to the dinner he offered at last year's auction that didn't even have him as a professor. Check and mate.

Lol. I'm not saying Goldwasser is as good, just that she is good in her own right.

Edit: Look at section B though. They will have the consensus best K's prof, the consensus best property prof, the consensus best crim prof, and could still get Tamanaha for torts and/or Kim for civ pro in the spring.

Fair. However I think Osgood is viewed just as highly. Interesting this came out so early this go around, I feel like it wasn't nearly as early last time.

Also interesting to note that there will be a section F again. I think that the class will definitely be smaller than ours, but that means they're not shooting for ~200 again.

Hey I'm in a *somewhat* similar position (low paying job, not much room for growth, don't like it - but I have good options to move laterally and then progress if I really wanted to). I'd say if this is what you want to do, then go for it. At almost a full scholly you'll mainly be paying for cost of living, which isn't a bad deal in my opinion. Plus, if you hate it after the first semester or year, you can always drop out and go back to teaching.

Yeah, I was under the impression Osgood was GOAT crim professor.

I remember twiddling my thumbs about actually attending this year/was probably leaning another school whose WL I had come off of when sections came out and I committed because of Tamanaha. As much as I complain about the school, I don't regret it. WUSTL is very lucky to have him.
