Re: Michigan c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
I submitted my complete application to Michigan over two weeks ago (1/6/11). On 1/12/11 I got an e-mail saying my application had been received, but not confirming it was complete, only still processing. The e-mail said I would receive an e-mail with a un and password for the status checker in 3-4 weeks from that e-mail.
This process is by far the longest to just getting complete of any the schools I applied to. Can anyone speak to having the same experience? Why is it taking a month + just to get me a user name and password for the status checker?

-Student President in UG.
-1 year from UG, now with a good post at a foreign embassy in DC.
-No Why Michigan essay.
-I received the terrifying email.
-In the packet, the dean hand-wrote "Your writing is lovely. I hope you'll join us."
-Very risky diversity statement, and a well-written -- though nothing over the top -- PS.
Good luck to everyone else.

I'm not sure man, I think so. I'd love to squeeze money out of them, not sure how. I saw that you pulled off a 30k, right?
Georgetown had me interview on Friday, and I have a feeling I'm either a preferred waitlist or accepted. I'd keep my job at the embassy if I go to Georgetown during 2L & 3L.

Oooh, that sounds like a tough choice to make. One of the scariest things to me about going to Mich is the lack of jobs in the area so it's not likely that there will be anything for me to do part-time while still in school during 2L or 3L year. Having a job that you can keep is certainly a strong factor in your decision. But I would still after all that choose UMich over GTown.Minesweeper wrote:I'm not sure man, I think so. There is no way you have time to work 2L if you do a journal. I barely slept last semester between callbacks, Note, journal work, class, etc.JoeMo wrote:Oooh, that sounds like a tough choice to make. I wouldn't take the above statement to be unequivocally true. A friend of mine worked 60+ hours a week while in school at Georgetown PT, was on the Georgetown Law Journal, and still graduated top 10%. He said there were a few others in similar situations. And, although my friend, and those he knew of, were all PT students, it's hard to imagine the difference in 1 to 2 more classes, per term, for full time students equates to the same as 60 hours/week of full time employment.blowhard wrote:There is no way you have time to work 2L if you do a journal. Re: Michigan c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
PT is a huge difference. Each class is say 5-6 hours of in-class time a week. With ~2 hours of reading per hour of class minimum. (For commercial transactions, I had more like 3-4 hours per hour of class.) That's 18 hours per class per week just to be prepared and in class time...not briefing or other time wasters. Add in finals studying, outlining, etc. So, 2 classes is an additional 36-40 hours of work per week minimum.ScrabbleChamp wrote:I wouldn't take the above statement to be unequivocally true. Not to mention I missed virtually the first month of class for callbacks. So, you have to make up all of that reading over the rest of the semester. And, writing a Note was a huge amount of work...probably 10-20 hours a week on the weeks I got to work on it. (So, not right before finals, callback trips, etc.)
Law Review is another 5-10 hours per week of assignments on top of the Note.
My frist class was at 8am and I worked until at least 8-9 pm on something or another...every day. Plus another 8-10 hour days on weekends. I put in probably twice as much time as 1L, which incidentally I probably could have worked during if ABA rules didn't restrict it.
Could someone do it...I'm sure. Can most people...hell no. I know of PT student taking like 4-5 credits...more like 1/3 time than 1/2 time. Also FWIW, I'm actually really efficient compared to most people I know.
Edit: I also think your friend is full of shit if he claims 60+ hours plus PT. With reading, class time, etc...you'd be looking at 100+ hours a week of work or school...probably more. Add in commute, etc and it would never be sustainable. I could believe he pulled off a 60 hour week during the semester but not every week.

Re: Michigan c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
Blowhard: I'm not trying to question your abilities or start an argument... I was simply stating a fact: I know someone that was able to graduate top 10% from Georgetown, participate in GLJ, work 60+ hours/week, and live to tell the tale.
Also, the poster to whom you directed your post said nothing about wanting to do LR, so your advice is a bit premature. Further, I just don't believe your math, and I was a math major. If you are honestly trying to make the case that 2 courses is equivalent to a 40 hour work week, than it is hard to imagine you've been successful enough to have earned a spot on LR and had so many call backs that you missed almost an entire month of class. Most successful students I've spoken to put in 40-60 hours a week and seem to be doing just fine, and some take more than 4 courses. Maybe it is due to innate ability and intelligence they only need to work 40-60 hours a week, though.

Re: Michigan c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
Dude, doubt my math all you want. I put in 40-60 hours total during 1L no problem. A lot of times less. 2L, specifically 2L first semester, is downright hectic. My Note was a huge amount of time...but my original comment about not working was qualified with "if you do a journal." Like I said...I'm sure some can do it. I wouldn't plan on it by any means though until you're there and doing the course load. Everyone I know who worked 1L quit 2L.ScrabbleChamp wrote:Blowhard: I'm not trying to question your abilities or start an argument... Do the math yourself. Look at a 2L course schedule and calculate the # of hours. Then factor in reading per class. My estimate was actually low. My gf can vouch for the # of hours I put in each week...she is acutely aware as it was a point of contention.
Wait until 1L starts, then calculate your hours per credit. Why do you think the average load is 13 credits and the max is 15 with permission? While you're less efficient 1L, the reading in 2L is longer and more complex. 2 Classes, so 6-8 credits, is a huge difference in hours.
Edit:

This is the reading for one practicum (around 1,100 pages), which meets one day per week for two hours...and only meets like 12 times. It's dense...it's not like reading an UG textbook. While I admit its more than typical...it's not that much more.
--ImageRemoved--
This is the stack from last semester. With the exception of the Tax code, we read at least 80% of it. Not to mention all of the cases and articles assigned digitally. Oh, and that's for two classes. The books for the other two aren't there.
This was one semester 1L:

No photos and we read every page (except the restatement...70%...and maybe 50% of the Farnsworth and Chirlsetin)

Blowhard: Maybe you don't study as efficiently as the people I know? None of them really spent time online on message boards, and none of them took the time to take photos of books to post on said message board to "prove" to someone else how right they are.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.
