I really hope so, since I didn't get it, and it seems like the email is for people they are SERIOUSLY considering. Then again, I think I've sent 3 LOCIs at this point.

Also: would it be helpful to say something along the lines of "Although I have already been accepted to -insert name of higher ranked school-, Columbia's ___ ____ ____ make it a top choice"? I.e. is it useful to mention higher ranked acceptances in conjuction with an expression of continued interest? I ask only because I've heard conflicting opinions on this. Thanks!

I wouldn't mention a YHS acceptance for a couple of reasons. First, each school has their own admission criteria (and target medians, 25ths/75ths, etc) and I doubt hearing that you got in elsewhere would make Columbia feel you were more worthy or desirable based on their standards. Second (and more cynically), I'm sure at this part of the cycle, schools are looking to protect their yield and if Columbia were deciding between a student with a YHS acceptance and one without one, they'd (rationally) be inclined to take the student more likely to attend, which in this case would be the one without the YHS acceptance (unless you say something to convince them that you'd definitely attend Columbia if admitted).

especially at this point, when they are less likely to be matching money from HYS. I doubt many people are going to be getting a lot of merit aid from CLS from here on, and the HYS need-based aid is likely to be higher.

The only possible good I can see is that there are three categories of holds
1. Getting accepted
2. Not sure, so we're going send this email to see how interested they still are
3. lolno

I really don't see myself as a presumptive admit, especially with many holds having better numbers and softs than me.

Hm, makes sense. I've heard that it would be helpful to mention a Stanford acceptance to Harvard, though obviously Harvard is a different case. I am still trying to figure out if there is a yield protect group of holds and a borderline group, or if hold status is strictly for borderline candidates. Did this part of the email bother anyone else: "At this date, we also understand that you might have committed to another law school for the next three years...we are saddened by the loss of your candidacy.." ? If they wanted us to join their class, they could have accepted us...

I just got a 37.5k scholly to NYU, would columbia match that (or come close) off the hold list?

Because if not and i know i want to stay in NYC im thinking to just withdraw

"EMAIL FROM COLUMBIA OMGWTFFF."

Then I read it and was like...

"Eh. Not bad."

So no meaning to it other than they are interested? Can we put a number to this or am I just being crazy?

I'm thinking of also putting that my recent trip to NY (for the NYU ASW) made me very certain that I would enjoy (read: prefer) to live in NYC for the next three years.

I was never asked for an updated transcript with fall grades (which everyone else seems to have gotten unless I'm wrong), so I was wondering whether I should include them. They are better than the last semesters grades on the current transcript but they still lower my overall gpa, though barely (To give you an idea my current lsac gpa is 3.72 and it would turn into 3.71 or 3.70). Yes I have the dreaded downward grade trend. I'm an engineering major. I kind of expected it. Would that just be idiotic of me?
