Yes. They'll respond with something like this:
In order to be considered for merit awards only, please log in to your financial aid application here:
https://faaps.law.nyu.edu/studentmain.html
After clicking on your application, please hit the button at the bottom of the application page and elect to "Change Application Type." You will then be brought to a screen allowing you to complete a variety of application types. After reading the application descriptions, you may select to complete either Type C or Type D if you wish to be considered for merit-based awards only.
Also, for new admits...I think doing this actually increases your award...

But don't you get URM status for being a cat? Well, I guess it depends on your breed.

I gotta say, I have not been impressed with NYU's admissions so far. Their financial aid office was a horror to deal with.

Haha. 90K, the horror!
NYU takes like 2 weeks to accept an applicant while other schools take 3 months to accept the same person.

I do not believe that the admissions office at NYU is a "horror".

NYU's financial aid was a gigantic ass ache for Noodley. He had his docs in before most of us and found out about six weeks after most other people, and they didn't return his emails or phone calls during that time. That would piss me off too.

Oh yeah, not complaining about the outcome. They were just a giant headache. I'd like to think they threw a few extra bucks in for the trouble.

So I applied in early October and my status date is 11/12. I'm happy to have not been rejected yet, but is it time for me to call them and see what's going on? Is it just me or is it odd that a) I haven't heard anything and b) my status hasn't updated since November?
For reference, I have an above median GPA and below median LSAT with no crazy softs or anything.
