Re: Waitlist Oasis c/o 2019
Forgive me if this has been brought up before. But how long should I wait to sign a lease at my deposited school if I am on waitlists? I don't want to miss out on good apartments, but I also don't want to waste hundreds of dollars if I get off the waitlist and have already signed a lease. Any advice?

That's kind of the risk of riding a waitlist. But essentially it would depend on the nature of the lease you are signing, and the availability of places that you are willing to live should you wait and not get your first choice (if you don't get off the WL). There are people who tell their stories of moving to the school for orientation week, and getting off the waitlist at their top school (which classes begin 3 days later, or something) and getting up and moving, so if that happens and you would go to the school in that case, you'd be spending the money anyways. But of course, you could get off the waitlist earlier, in which case you wouldn't want to spend the money. So the answer is likely: as long as you can handle the uncertainty of the numerous factors (not knowing where you'll live, not being 100% committed to the school, not having a set move date, etc).WhiteHouse wrote:Forgive me if this has been brought up before. I mean, I'm not really qualified to speak to the practicality of my response, as someone who has w/d from all WLs, but it's something I had considered before.ausimpv wrote:Thanks for this response. I too am weighing this as I've been accepted to a school I'm ok with going to while my top school has me WL. being that I want to live close to the accepted school, I want to look at apartments but I'm also wary due to the chance of me getting off WL (I've been reminding admissions how much I want to go there so I hope that counts for something, right?)lymenheimer wrote:That's kind of the risk of riding a waitlist. I just got in at UMich yesterday with a scholly today! So I know that WL has movement as of now.capricasixx wrote:Out of curiosity, how many of you have heard from schools at which you're waitlisted? If you don't mind sharing, I'd be curious to hear which schools have sent out "waitlist updates" asking you to confirm your continued interest, or if anyone has actually received an offer of admission off a waitlist at this early stage.

I wrote a LOCI about 2 weeks after I was waitlisted, and then another 3-4 weeks later. (Which brought me to just around deposit time). I stressed that Michigan was my top choice and that if offered admission I would absolutely attend. I sent another LOR around the time of my second LOCI and then visited the campus and spoke with an admissions officer! I was super proactive cause Michigan was my dream. Other than that, I obsessed a lot over TLS and LSN (but those things I don't recommend so much haha)

Wait a second...I've already submitted my deposit and accepted a scholarship at one school. Another just yesterday notified me of my placement on the waitlist decision. Are you telling me I must withdraw and stick with my original school? I thought people forfeit deposits all the time.

Sorry if I worded that badly. You can certainly accept the new school's offer, but you obviously forfeit your deposit with the original school.twokings wrote:OtterLaw wrote:You have to withdraw from all schools you've received a decision from when you accept a scholarship and deposit. Accepting placement on the waitlist does not mean twokings forfeits their deposit. It's what OtterLaw said before-- a waitlist is effectively a no decision. When you place a deposit and accept a scholarship, you have to withdraw all other offers and decisions. A waitlist is neither an offer nor a decision.OtterLaw wrote:Sorry if I worded that badly. If you deposit at one school and then get accepted off of a waitlist and end up going to the waitlist school, you will most likely lose the original deposit. It's the risk of depositing and riding another waitlist.LaRetaguardia wrote:Accepting placement on the waitlist does not mean twokings forfeits their deposit. Right. I think I misread what you wrote in the first place. I understood it as tworkings would have to forfeit his deposit to stay on the waitlist. My bad!OtterLaw wrote:If you deposit at one school and then get accepted off of a waitlist and end up going to the waitlist school, you will most likely lose the original deposit. I don't know what deal Spivey made with the devil but as I was reading this tweet I got a waitlist update email from Hastings. It was spooky. Is the theory that once HYS starts letting people in off their wait lists, other schools will too as students withdraw to go there? Looks like H just let some people in this week.

Yep. As goes Harvard, so goes the rest of the T20. Of course, there could be a limited effect if Harvard were to let in 15 people who were all committed to NYU, and then NYU replaces those losses with 15 people who were all committed to Northwestern. But statistically that's very unlikely, so there will likely be a broader influence.calgoldenbear wrote:Is the theory that once HYS starts letting people in off their wait lists, other schools will too as students withdraw to go there?
