Thanks! I plan on living alone so as long as I can do so for close to $1500 I'm okay with that. I live in DC now and rent is pretty much the same (damn height restrictions). I see a lot of studios on craigslist, both in Brooklyn and Harlem, for $1100-1400. Should I assume those are organ farms?Well rent can be anything, it really depends. If you want to live alone you can spend 1500-1700 if you go above 120th. If you want to live below it will be around 2000-2100 per month. This figure doesn't include sublets or super tiny apartments with a murphy bed (and a sublet may be the way to go if you're looking to spend less) The best thing is obviously to get a roomate, because you can split rent.

There's plenty of cheap living in the city, but the more desirable a neighborhood, the harder it is to uncover. If you're not familiar with the city, I strongly recommend you spend a day here getting to know some areas. Anywhere along the 1, 2, 3, A, B, C, D lines is legit, from a commuting perspective, as is midtown. After that, it gets exponentially harder.ph5354a wrote: I see a lot of studios on craigslist, both in Brooklyn and Harlem, for $1100-1400. Should I assume those are organ farms?
For anyone who doesn't mind a longer commute (and can study/sleep on the train) I highly recommend dykman/inwood as being both affordable and safe.

ALL BEWARE:
(in response to the cheaper studio someone found in Manhattan)
This ACTUALLY happened to me, so I found this apartment in the NY Times classified ads (IT WASN'T EVEN CRAIGLIST!) for a small nice apartment.
Emailed the guy, he sent me photos, yada yada. Then he said he had to rent it ASAP because he was leaving the country, etc....
Anyway long story short this guy was a scam, I talked to my bank afterwards and they said tons of people have customers wire them money for the first month rent for an apartment that doesn't even exist. So I was out 1,300 dllrs. Never never never rent an apartment you have not seen (this is a shout out for everyone that doesn't live in NYC and can't see the apartment before moving in...don't). If you can afford it, always use a broker (they are expensive but so worth it at the end of the day).
