Perhaps it's useless if your intent is big law.

The #1 ranked IP school in NY has more appeal to me as someone wants to do patent law, than it does for you.

Specialization shouldn't have all the weight in a person's decision, however its uncalled for to call it useless merely because it is useless to you.

Agreed. I didn't say you're reasoning is useless but that IMHO specialty rankings are useless. You want to go to the best law school that will admit you (with keeping in my COA etc.) if you want to live and practice in NYC and have the option to go to a better school for NYC employment. If cardozo is your best option by all means go there. But if youre accepted to both Cardozo and Fordham and will pay the same at both, I would not base my decision on either school's specialty ranking.

Exactly... I would not go to Cardozo in hopes of landing an IP job over most schools in the top 20. Their is a reason why Cardozo's is ranked where it is and its employment prospects, in perspective to price, speak for themselves. Just look at Vermont - #1 for Environmental law, yet they are about to go out of business.

Again it's not my #1 factor, but for example, in a contrived hypothetical where Cardozo and Brooklyn (or Cardozo and Fordham) were ranked the same (or very close) on USNWR, I would easily pick Cardozo because of the relevance of the specialty to my career prospects.

I agree with this. But in the case of NYC schools it's just not the reality

That example is actually not as contrived as you would think. Cardozo has done amazingly especially given the very young age of the school. Entering the game in 1976 against schools founded in the 1800's and making it to where it has is impressive. I think it's still very early in the life of the school to determine its permanent stability against other nyc schools. Yes, the current reality of the job market in NYC is what it is right now, but that's a variable that can change.

I could definitely envision scenarios where Cardozo changes USNWR rank enough in either direction that it is on par with either Fordham or Brooklyn.

Also I know this is a minority opinion of TLS, but while important, USNWR isn't everything.

While I am interested in IP law as well, the cost of living in the area is absurd. I'm also not a big fan of city life in general.

Dozo gave me a scholarship, but the amount of debt I would incur just from additional expenses is enough to deter me.

You haven't heard back yet? PM me your numbers, if you don't mind, and some of the schools you applied to. Are you from the tri-state area?

For anyone curious, Cardozo seems very open to negotiating scholarships. I emailed the admissions office my request, and they had me send them a scanned pdf of my higher offer from Brooklyn. Said they would get back to me by late March.

The deposit for May Start is due at the end of March? I still haven't heard from them. Guess that means I'm not getting in. Maybe I should tell them to switch my app to Fall start before they ding me for May?

Does Dozo have a decent part-time program? Oftentimes firms will recruit scientists and pay for them to get a J.D. at a part-time program. That could partly explain Dozo's IP bent.

FWIW, I know a few IP 3L's at Dozo and they've all done very well for themselves. But they all have prior STEM work experience and a masters in their individual fields.

Yea kind of sad they won't take your word - all other schools did.

I contacted admissions the same day and responded to their email. Last week i sent a LOCI. Ill probably call them in two weeks or so and see how the movement of the waitlist is or just to remind them that i am very interested in Cardozo. Cardozo is my first choice. yours?

Nope. I asked the same thing a while back. It goes from "complete and under review" to "decision rendered and sent".
