Re: Fordham c/o 2015/16 (2011-2012 Cycle)
Does anyone know if Fordham negotiates scholarships?? I just received my acceptance email, but there was no scholarship one to follow so I'm assuming I got nothing. I received $20000 from W&L and was hoping I could maybe get 5-8k from Fordham? Thoughts?

Just wait. They give themselves a two week window from your acceptance. Some people found out the same day, others much later.GBURGLAW wrote:Does anyone know if Fordham negotiates scholarships?? Well, assuming I get nothing from Fordham, do you guys think it's justifiable to pay sticker for Fordham and turn down $20,000 from W&L?? I want to do BigLaw (like everyone else applying to law school) and would prefer to work in NY over somewhere like DC. Thoughts???

I would definitely try to negotiate first if you've received money from similarly-ranked schools. Evaluate the decision after that.GBURGLAW wrote:Well, assuming I get nothing from Fordham, do you guys think it's justifiable to pay sticker for Fordham and turn down $20,000 from W&L?? I think the TLS consensus from previous threads is: absolutely do not pay ~225k to go to Fordham.GBURGLAW wrote:Well, assuming I get nothing from Fordham, do you guys think it's justifiable to pay sticker for Fordham and turn down $20,000 from W&L?? to all those on the wait list I spoke with the admissions director and she said they are hoping to look at the wait list starting in February.

Re: Fordham c/o 2015/16 (2011-2012 Cycle)
If you want biglaw you should reapply with better numbers to other schools. If you are willing to take a 25% chance that you will get biglaw and a 75% chance that you will not then proceed to Fordham or W&L. Fordham is definitely not worth full tuition because you are getting the same education as any other school without any enhanced income earning ability. They will say, oh you are in NYC, but that does not translate to better jobs or quality of life. W&L on the other hand--I cannot speak for the job prospects, but its in the middle of nowhere and it I think you assume its a washington DC feeder school. Many employers in washington DC will have no clue where the school is even located. You know a lot of progressive people who identify with and show their appreciation for Robert E. Lee, namesake of the school?GBURGLAW wrote:Well, assuming I get nothing from Fordham, do you guys think it's justifiable to pay sticker for Fordham and turn down $20,000 from W&L?? This is just dumb. My friend (a liberal) is at WL and he says the atmosphere is just fine & there are plenty of progressive/LGBT students there.MrAnon wrote: You know a lot of progressive people who identify with and show their appreciation for Robert E. Lee, namesake of the school?
But yeah, agree with the sticker price thing. I mean, even if you get like 8K, you will still come out with 200k in debt. Unless you get major financial assistance, Fordham is not worth that.

Its not "just dumb". There may very well be tons of LGBT and progressives and I'm sure they have tons and tons of exchange students nowadays too at all levels of W&L. Fact remains, it aint a DC powerhouse at undergrad or grad level, and its a conservative school no matter how they spin it. You'll find that southern fratboy atmosphere prevails, surely not in grad school, but generally on campus. You're just as well off going to George Mason for a law job in DC. Think of it this way--did you consider W&L undergrad for a second? No? Well then why would you consider the law school. Just because it is a T1? If trying to justify it, of course you can always find evidence, but particularly strong evidence?

Re: Fordham c/o 2015/16 (2011-2012 Cycle)
Haha, the GM faculty and student body is probably 5 times as conservative as WL's. The only advantage to GM is in state tuition (if you're from VA) and location, though the COL is much higher. Even if GM is closer, I still think, from living/working in DC, WL carries more weight.MrAnon wrote:tennisking88 wrote:This is just dumb. Got an email from Fordham saying im in, no money mentioned. Do they send that later? Also when is a good time to start negotiating? I got a full ride to Cardozo hope that gives me some leverage with them?

Exactly this. I will also drop in here and contribute when possible.Gotti wrote:tagging...i'm also a 1L at fordham. loving it! good luck everyone.

I was waitlisted and later accepted with a scholarship. So for those of you WL'ed, don't lose hope. I did not write a LOCI, but received an unsolicited email inquiring about a couple things on my application. Two days later I was accepted, and the next day I received the scholarship email. If anyone has any related questions feel free to PM me.

Hey what have you (or anyone else currently at Fordham for that matter) heard about the new building? Is everything still on schedule?JenDarby wrote:Exactly this. I will also drop in here and contribute when possible.Gotti wrote:tagging...i'm also a 1L at fordham. loving it! good luck everyone.

I haven't really heard anything about the new building. What I will say is there is a rendition of it in the lobby, and they are serious about pushing its future existence, so they will probably work to keep it on schedule. On the other hand the building site looks pretty stagnant.clee33 wrote:Hey what have you (or anyone else currently at Fordham for that matter) heard about the new building? Not really, I'm *lucky enough* to have a view of the site from my dorm. In the beginning of the semester it was just dirt, they're currently on the third floor or so, with the basement done as well. But that could be slow by NY standards.JenDarby wrote:I haven't really heard anything about the new building. Yeah, this is actually quite relevant to my interests... I suppose it wouldn't actually change my mind either way, but it would be a huge plus to be in that building for 3L. I've been checking in every couple of days on the Fordham site to watch it going up.clee33 wrote:Hey what have you (or anyone else currently at Fordham for that matter) heard about the new building? I also feel like the new building will give Fordham at least a little boost in rankings/general prestige.

The Fordham building blows, but in all honesty in really doesn't make a difference. I go there for class, it serves its purpose, and I leave. I would do this even if it were cleaner, more technologically advanced, etc.cogitoergosum wrote:Yeah, this is actually quite relevant to my interests... I have no idea. Judging from the past few pages it looks like they've been waitlisting and then admitting people pretty quickly?

I was WL'ed in Feb and accepted mid-May last year. So if you don't hear back quickly, don't give up hope! (I also didn't write a LOCI, so that might speed up the process)
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
