are we sure deposits are due April 1st? im still just on complete app as well?

I know jobs are usually given out after 1L. I am going to attend UConn part time this year, and since transferring from pt to ft means taking summer courses, am I "doomed"? okay, maybe not doomed, but is it considered bad since I don't have the summer (compared to a ft) to get a job? I'm a bit confused because 1L year grades are considered the most important. Thanks for your help!

Pretty sure the only 1L summer course for PT students is Moot Court, not a full course load. You should be fine to work, and you should be fine competitive-ness wise with FT'ers.

I wish jobs were "given out" after 1L! That sounds like we get to take a number and line up, which would rule.

Seriously though, if you're interested in pursuing the traditional OCI/summer associate track for getting a firm job, you would actually need to make sure your 2L summer is cleared up. 1L summer is just a chance to get some legal experience on your resume in preparation for OCI (on campus interviews) which take place in the fall of your 2L year. So you're certainly not doomed if you spend the summer taking classes pursuant to switching to FT- OCI employers/interviewers would totally understand that. You could also try to score a part-time internship during the summer, if possible, so you could still get some legal experience. The main point I'm driving at is that you don't need to be worried about your 1L summer at this point. Best of luck to you, and congratulations on choosing your law school!

You're welcome. When I was in your position I worried about everything having to do with starting law school, so I definitely understand where you're coming from.

Quick plug- if you guys are headed to admitted students day, I recommend having "breakfast with the dean." He is a fantastic guy and he's really not scary or intimidating or anything. Also, don't be afraid to talk to current students, if you see any. We all would be happy to answer questions or chat. I know I sound like a spy drone from the admissions office or something, but I'm actually just remembering how nervous/timid I was at ASD and orientation, and I assume some of you feel the same way. Just remember that nobody expects you to have any idea about the way the school works, or the way the law works, and there's really no such thing as a dumb question. Good luck to all of you!

Does anyone know anything about the availability of jobs outside of Connecticut for current students (Boston, NY). Overall, would you recommend UCONN?

Well my choices are Northeastern, Washington & Lee, Wake Forest, Richmond, Iowa, Ohio State.....I am just trying to figure out what the best choice for me is going to be.

General consensus on the boards seems to be that UConn places as well or better than Northeastern in the Boston metro. Of those choices though UConn is probably best regionally for NY work..

Really, there's a lot of factors. I'm picking UConn over several of the schools you mentioned for the following reasons:

1. Cost - in state + scholarship (1L only) makes UConn my most affordable option, although it was close, considering COL in the south vs. North! Also, I have the opportunity to live rent free for a year or two if need be.
2. Location - I want to be able to work in New England. Although I'd love to work in VT/NH/ME, I'm fine with working in CT. If you're not good with working in CT, UConn will probably not be a great choice. I was dubious as to the ability of my other options to get me back to New England.
3. Vibe - I got a really good feeling from the campus. Hard to quantify, but there you have it.
4. Connections - I've lived in CT my whole life, my family is here and any legal connections that I have are here. I believe this will help in securing employment.

However, if you don't want to work in CT, or have significantly lower priced options, you might make a different choice. From UConn's website, about 60% of students reported working in CT after graduation. For example, from your list, if your #1 priority is to work in Boston, I'd take Northeastern. I think personally one has a better chance of getting a legal job from UConn, but maybe not a legal job in Boston. If you don't really care where you work, and a scholly at Wake or W&L makes it cheaper, then that might be the best choice for you.

So there's a lot of variables - I'd recommend UConn, from your list, if you living and working in New England is important to you and the price is reasonable compared to your options. I think the quality of education and reputation within the state and immediate region are solid.

Mine was 2-3 weeks, but I did send in an email requesting consideration. They may be holding off til after their first deposit deadline.
