Sure, no prob. I think for CA, Kent might begin to make sense with a sizable scholarship, w/o stips. Even then, all that would do is put you in a better financial situation during and after school, which is big, but of course it won't land you a job in CA. That said, I might take Kent for CA with a full ride, but I like Chicago a lot.deepspacenine wrote:Thanks for the advice. You make some great points. Seems like the best way into the Valley for non-HYS + Boalt folks is through lateral moves and massive work/connections from another region.drdolittle wrote:This is anecdotal, but Kent's got low name recognition in CA in general. Santa Clara, historically well regarded for IP, is basically ranked similar to Kent overall.deepspacenine wrote: Anyone have some guidance/advice. I'm not saying coming to CA is impossible from Kent. But I do think that, realistically, it'd be very difficult without substantial legal experience somewhere else first, or phenomenal connections.![]()
Keep in mind that schools like Kent, SCU, William Mitchell, etc., developed solid reputations in IP, well above their overall rank, before IP got so high profile. Now, as the "top" schools actively covet IP to serve econ needs, the IP reputations of the Kents and SCUs will likely decline as others have pointed out
I'd think most Kent grads in CA now probably got their first job in the Midwest, or in CA but during the high flying tech bubble.
Btw, from what I've heard, Kent's a good school. It's just that the CA legal market is very tough to crack right now, and probably will be for the foreseeable future.

Does Chicago have a big tech industry? I assume it's primarily big-business and there isn't mid-law/boutique firms servicing a startup industry or high-tech industry like the Valley or Austin.drdolittle wrote:Sure, no prob. I'm not too familiar with markets outside CA, but Chicago's one of the biggest and most desirable cities in the U.S. with major research universities, so I'm sure there are IP law opportunities. You might want to ask Desert Fox and rayiner. They go to NU for IP and they'd know about the market.deepspacenine wrote: Does Chicago have a big tech industry? But I found it very interesting that in a November NY Times article regarding the Justice Dept's new position on gene patenting ("Gene Patent Ruling Raises Questions for Industry," Nov 1, 2010), the biotech patent lawyer quoted practices at an IP firm in Chicago. Immediately made me think that Chicago might have a more diverse tech market than I thought... And I've heard 3M's spawned off solid IP law opportunities around Minneapolis as well. This is all anecdotal, so try to ask people who'd know more directly about Chicago/Midwest IP law.

Is anyone else still waiting to hear back from Kent? I haven't been in review for that along--about a month or so since the second round of review, I think, and maybe six to seven weeks since the first--but at this point in the game, I don't know what to think. If they wanted to reject me, why not do it already?

I feel your pain. I've been in review twice, once in late Jan and then 2/7...where I've been sitting. I don't know what to think. If you look at LSN there seems to not have been a lot of movement at Kent...minus their giving away $$$. Very late in the game, tomorrow is April..for Pete's-sakes!!b.j. wrote:Is anyone else still waiting to hear back from Kent? Do you think schools are accepting applicants this late in the game? I'm going through this "delayed" process at six other schools!
GL to you.

At this point, I'm trying to think that since most of the schools I applied to that I haven't heard from aren't hugely competitive, this isn't necessarily an awful sign. I'm not an automatic admit at any of them (159/2.5, although my in major GPA is much better at a 3.23), but not an automatic reject, either, I think. I applied to Bloomington for shits and giggles/because I had a ten percent chance and they said in an e-mail that their process takes a while, so I haven't been antsy. (Maybe the lack of a status checker is helping in that case.) But Pittsburgh, Villanova, and Kent? Either they are being obnoxious in keeping my hopes up, or they are trying to see how many responses of the previously admitted people they will get back...right? Oh yeah, Maryland and Houston, I applied to the PT program. Houston hasn't even put me under review yet, but Maryland has had me there for almost two months.
The other part of me isn't confident at all. I applied to South Carolina without realizing how little I wanted to go there. I just checked it a few minutes ago, and the status said "decision mailed." That, and the fact that I received a wait list offer from a school that I was accepted to last year hasn't left me particularly confident about going to school at all next year, as sad as that may seem.

Well Hopefully you get into Kent! Are you going to wait out your waitlists? I applied at U of H Pt..too. I didn't send it till really late 3/21. That was my first attempt at applying for pt.b.j. wrote:To you as well.singingkris wrote:I feel your pain. I've been in review twice, once in late Jan and then 2/7...where I've been sitting. I haven't even gotten anything from Hofstra telling me about the wait list. They put me on it on 3/22, and yet, nothing, despite the fact that I live less than an hour from the campus. I imagine I will hear something bad from South Carolina soon, but I don't care about that.singingkris wrote:Well Hopefully you get into Kent! Are you going to wait out your waitlists? Re: Chicago Kent - Prospective Class of 2014
Anyone going to be at the ASW activities tomorrow?
Also anyone who has visited the campus before, how formal/conservative is the school? Do people actually dress business casual to classes?
Oh and I have read all the posts on this forum about dress code for asw. but honestly it is hard getting any decent information from them with all the assless chaps comments and then the varied answers between business suits and jeans and tshirts.
Has anyone been to the previous visit days, and if so what was everyone wearing?

I'm contemplating going tomorrow. Probably gonna go business casual, haven't read any of the threads about it but figure coming from the business world that this seems like a relaxed formal event.

Recent innovation awards banquet I attended in Chicago highlighted a lot of the tech companies and startups making moves in Chicago and the keynote speakers was one of the Google heads. Called Chicago the "silicon valley" of the midwest. The winner of the awards was Chicago based Groupon.drdolittle wrote:I'm not too familiar with markets outside CA, but Chicago's one of the biggest and most desirable cities in the U.S. with major research universities, so I'm sure there are IP law opportunities. I'm visiting on Tuesday, taking the tour at noon and then sitting in on Legislation with Prof. Heyman. I'm hoping to meet with a financial person too so I can talk to them about increasing my scholarship. DePaul offered me a lot more than Kent, so I want to use that to my advantage.

Any thoughts on ASW?
I've deposited money to Kent but won't be able to visit. If anyone could give me their opinion, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all since this thread has reached 17 pages and most people are now inquiring about waitlists I suggest we move some of the conversation over to the Class of 2014 Kent post. I personally would like to get some of us TLS'ers together in the summer before orientation. Get some drinks and get to know one another. The link to the thread is http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 8&t=152116
For all those on waitlist, best of luck! I hope to hear from you guys soon on the other thread.
