I plan on only reading the Silmarillion during 1L, there's real life lessons to be learned about contracts, property, etc. in it.

My real answer to the 0L prep thing: do ~some~ if you feel compelled to. I recommend reading a short supplement (Acing Contracts, Acing Civ Pro, "Acing" any topic in that series really) early on in the semester (just as good as before the semester) or ~slightly~ before the semester.

But anything more than that as a basic 'lay of the land' is likely pointless. Spend more time soliciting older students for professor specific advice and master the art of typing fast, as mentioned by Scott.

Other than that, I recommend to follow the ARodg mantra:

...and drinking. You'll need some tolerance for the beginning of 1L social events.

I just got 125 wpm on typetest.com so I think it's safe to say I'll finish in the top 1%.

RancidSumo wrote:My advice to anyone wanting to do something useful in the summer, and take it for what it's worth coming from a 0L, is to read normal books. Not books about lawyers, not books about law school, and nothing at all related to the material we'll be studying come August. Get some good literature and read.

Being an avid reader is all I've ever done when it comes to prepping for things like this. All I did to study for the LSAT is one practice test the night before and I scored a 172. I credit that entirely to reading good books and to the lessons they teach if you pay attention. Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Joyce, Wolfe, McCarthy, Melville, Eliot, Shakespeare, Homer, Dante, Proust , Beckett, and Faulkner will teach you much more about how to think and reason than any pre law school book will. They'll also teach you about prose (although I suspect that Joycean Prose would earn you a big fat 0 on a law test), beauty, empathy, and life in general. Plus, they are just plain fun. They'll give you gifts that you can carry with you for the rest of your life. This is the only reading prep I'll be doing and I'd recommend the same to any of you. The closet you should get to a book about law is Dostoevsky.

Anyway, I'll climb down off my soapbox now. Five years at an engineering school had made me pretty defensive about this belief and I'm entirely convinced I'm right about it.

Great practice for carrying around unnecessarily large/heavy books and referencing lots of footnotes. #infinitejestjokes #unusedhashtags

Wow, who'd have expected an honest opinion about the fun and merits of reading to be met with hostility and anti-intellectualism on a law school board? Lol you lot are as bad as the engineering students thinking that being able to solve math problems is all there is to life.

I never claimed it was necessary to read literature on order to be a good lawyer or successful in law school. I just said it would help and would be a good (and fun) use of your time in the summer before starting. That's alright though, I've got three years to change some minds.

Reading good literature can't hurt, and was decently helpful to my college success IMO, but really as a 0L just do what you want. There's really enough down time in the beginning of the semester to "get ahead" on reading and supps work.

In general just make sure you're mentally healthy and determined.

And pepper your angus, there will be inevitable pain.

ETA: @Lawz and Peaches, thanks for the props but I live with a guy (both of us straight roomies) who's a legit 10, so I try to stay humble lol

You'd be surprised how typing speed can screw with people. No need to reply to solicted advice with snark.

I wasn't being snarky I realize it's sound advice, it's just a joke. It's loud and obnoxious when I type at max speed though.

Getting to Maybe recommends you take them via typewriter.

almost all are your choice (don't choose to hand write, fyi).

only one so far has been mandatory hand-written. And that was just essentially a midterm exam for a 1 credit (joke) class, Legal Research.

For someone who is so great at critical thinking, you are totally missing why your comment is being ridiculed. You are clearly boasting about your 172 with no prep. Then go on to tell us that if we don't enjoy those authors, and take away some meaning from the literature, that we won't have a successful career. Maybe you aren't this way in real life, and maybe you didn't mean to come across this way, but you just sound like a doucher.
