My girlfriend had a dream last night that I got accepted to Stanford. Since it is something that I have been dreaming about for a long time, it can only mean one thing: I really need to stop talking about how badly I want to go to Stanford.

I'm shocked there is no movement thus far this whole week. This is getting absurd.

I mean, it's Stanford. A similar thing happened last year (if you're obsessive like me and want to go read through that entire threadConstantine wrote:I'm shocked there is no movement thus far this whole week. This is getting absurd.

Is stanford a school where applying in January is really realllly a bad idea unless you're URM?kershka wrote:I mean, it's Stanford. I don't think so. Of the top of my head I think SLS is one of the schools where there is a trivial or non-existent difference in chances of acceptance by month.

Re: Stanford c/o 2017 (2013-2014 applicants)
Nah, I don't think it matters. They hold so many applications every year that if you're potentially competitive (but not a sure thing), you will probably have to wait a while. If Faye isn't impressed by your app, it won't matter if you apply on Sept 15th or February 1st.hellomellow wrote:Is stanford a school where applying in January is really realllly a bad idea unless you're URM?kershka wrote:I mean, it's Stanford. (I applied in January and I am still waiting like half of TLS's membership so I'm not an unbiased party.)

Re: Stanford c/o 2017 (2013-2014 applicants)
That's what I thought too but I feel like I haven't seen much happening to January applicants at all. Maybe I'm selectively choosing to not see it but it sure feels that way >.<drawstring wrote:I don't think so. FWIW, here is the data. SLS's is actually listed as not statistically significant (check it in the thread), which doesn't mean there is no effect. So maybe it could make a difference.

That would be interesting.
I think Yale's website says that applicants who submit before November 15 are statistically more likely to be accepted.
Yale is sort of known for not using rolling admissions in the way every other law school does. Now your statement could more correspond to the top tier students having their shit ready to go at the beginning of the cycle as opposed to those who submit later. Even on the TLS profile of Yale it states, " However, it should be noted that applying earlier in the cycle does not provide any boost to an applicant’s chances of being admitted."
Based on my statistical analysis, it definitely doesn't.
What about the rest of HYSCCN?
Using LSN data, and controlling for LSAT, GPA, timing of decision, ED (where applicable), gender, non-trad status, and URM status, including only the 2010-11 through 2012-2013 cycles, and using only people whose final outcome was either "accept" or "reject" (the number is the % increase in your chances of an acceptance for each earlier-month you submitted - so Oct v. Nov, for example):
Yale: Not statistically significant
Harvard: 23.6%
Stanford: Not statistically significant
Chicago: 126.5% (not a typo)
Columbia: Not statistically significant
NYU: Not statistically significant
UVA: 30.7%
Penn: 45.9%
Berkeley: 46.4%
Michigan: 50.3%
Duke: Not statistically significant
Northwestern: 29.1%
Cornell: 27.4%
GULC: 22.4%
I just used the 2010-2013 data because 2010 is when the number of applicants started dropping sharply. If you include all the cycles available from LSN, a lot more of these schools look like they give a boost for applying early.

Re: Stanford c/o 2017 (2013-2014 applicants)
At this point, Stanford just takes it's time to release WL and ding decisions. The last straight acceptance on LSN from last year was April 9th. The rejections started coming not long after that and WLs just a day or too longer. Basically there was a lot of movement from mid to late April, none of it good.
Unfortunately, there were a number of both dings and WLs that didn't hear until April 30th. So it might be a couple more long weeks before we hear for sure.
