Heyy speaking of which, I remember hearing about a no laptop section but I can't remember where I heard it from. Anybody know if one of the sections doesn't allow laptops (or I think maybe it was some of the teachers in a certain section)?LSATmakesMeNeurotic wrote:Anyone else get the email that says we'll be registered on July 22?![]()

I think we talked about that around page.... 45 or so? The general response was that certain professors don't allow laptops, but there isn't an entire section. (although I wonder how much it would suck if all the professors in your section didn't like laptops)ns77770 wrote:Heyy speaking of which, I remember hearing about a no laptop section but I can't remember where I heard it from. It would make me pay more attention, that's for sure. I don't think it's too bad.

That's the mindset that got our country into this mess in the first place! I can't stop smoking so keep taxing me until I can. I can't control my eating so ban fatty foods. I can't keep my business afloat so bail me out. I can't study on my own so ban laptops!FeelTheHeat wrote:It would make me pay more attention, that's for sure. I don't think it's too bad.
All kidding aside, I won't be bringing my laptop to class regardless of policy because I suck at taking computer notes.

I just hate lugging it around. Plus, I like writing it down then typing the important stuff into a document at home.LSATmakesMeNeurotic wrote:That's the mindset that got our country into this mess in the first place! Quick question for those that got into UF this past cycle. I'm applying this coming cycle and have been out of UG for 6 years, and my UG GPA was not so great. The personal statement seems to ask for focus to be on academics- did you follow this suggestion? Do you think it's important stay with their suggested topic?
Thanks and congrats on your acceptance!

UF got the same 2 page, life story PS I sent to every other law school, and it didn't affect anything. I still wouldn't recommend it, but take it for what it's worth.UMiamiCane wrote:The personal statement seems to ask for focus to be on academics- did you follow this suggestion?

Around what was your GPA/LSAT? Feel free to PM if you'd like.
I submitted my application with a 2.87/166. It took them several months to accept me. I am definitely an exception to the norm, as they generally have a pretty strict GPA floor. So if your numbers are around there, you definitely have hope.
My personal statement was the same all the other schools got. It was accidental. However, given my GPA, I think it is fair to say it is not particularly important.
Best of luck this upcoming cycle. I'm definitely proud to be a Gator (you'll find evidence floating around on TLS haha)

Fellow Gators, please tell me if we are allowed to work during 1L, I won't no matter what, but a lot of people are trying to tell me I should (idiots lol), and I think it is prohibited by the school anyway… Or is working during 1L allowed?

1. DO NOT LISTEN TO DEUCE. With his #s he could have wiped his ass with his app and gotten in.
2. Admins were VERY helpful with e and my personal statement, and stressed over and over again how important it is to follow the guidelines exactly. If I were you, I would call them and ask them that exact question.

The ABA does not allow a full-time student to work more than 20 hours per week:PleaseHelpThanks wrote:Fellow Gators, please tell me if we are allowed to work during 1L, I won't no matter what, but a lot of people are trying to tell me I should (idiots lol), and I think it is prohibited by the school anyway… Or is working during 1L allowed?

However, please note that if you work for UF (e.g., if you work at the law library), UF's policy is that you cannot work more than 10 hours per week (when there is class; this rule does not apply during the summer/breaks--and note that the 20 hrs./wk. ABA rule is relaxed during summers). You need to get permission from Student Affairs to work on campus.
I hope this helps!

GatorStudent, thanks for the info. Any insight into how difficult getting a library job is?

You're welcome.FeelTheHeat wrote:GatorStudent, thanks for the info. Any insight into how difficult getting a library job is?
It's fairly difficult to get one of these jobs, as law students (and undergraduate students) know that it's a great job. While the pay is very low (but that's not really a surprise), it's an easy job--essentially you just check out study room keys and books to people. However, not many people check out anything until the end of the semester. The only time it stinks is during finals time, because you may have to work longer hours if you choose to do so, and people get cranky during that time--but it's smooth sailing for most of the semester. You're really getting paid to read/study for classes.
If you're interested in one of those jobs, I'd talk to the front desk as soon as possible and fill out an application.

Re: U. of Florida 2010-2011 Applicants!!
Ok, here's the best answer to whether or not we can work (I should have looked harder earlier, bad Gator!
)
"Student Employment
As a full-time law school, the College of Law adheres to American Bar Association policy requiring students to devote substantially all of their working hours to the study of law. Academic schedules and minimum load requirements are designed to reflect this policy. First-year students are prohibited from employment. Requests for exceptions to the prohibition on first-year employment should be sought through the Office of Student Affairs. No student may be employed more than 20 hours per week under any circumstances."

Just to be clarify, I've never heard of the school denying a 1L from working. However, even though the policy may not be on the website, they normally won't allow the law student to work more than 10 hours per week.PleaseHelpThanks wrote:Ok, here's the best answer to whether or not we can work (I should have looked harder earlier, bad Gator!)

That's sound advice. Trying to get good grades is the most important thing as a 1L. Unless you really need the money, I wouldn't recommend working.mistergoft wrote: If you are going to look into working, I highly suggest at least doing your first semester without it to gauge the workload before you go off running yourself into the ground...

3.07/168. With being out of UG for 6 years and my low GPA, it feels unnatural to write about academics. For me, it would make so much more sense to write about my work experience (which, btw, led me to law school).Couple thoughts/questions:

Just curious- did you apply right after UG?
And, thanks for sharing!

Yup. Given my shitty GPA, writing about academics certainly wouldn't have done me any favors. You aren't a shoe-in, but should be good. Have you co sidered a retake? Northwestern would love you.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
