Re: IN AT The University of Texas Class of 2014
Anyone know anything about scholarship negotiation with Texas? My GPA was below their floor to receive an initial offer, and I would love to go, but not at sticker. They said they only consider competing offers once, and I'm still waiting to hear from Penn, Cornell, Northwestern, GULC about scholarship, and Michigan, Chicago, NYU, Duke, and USC for an admissions decision. I am unlikely to get any game-changing scholarship offers, so should I just go ahead and submit Vanderbilt's offer of $50,000? Would they offer a scholarship to compete with an acceptance and maybe a small offer from, say, Penn? Or just the raw offer from any peer school or better?

Will they offer additional money for need after the original offers, or is it say to say its over after your merit?

Re: IN AT The University of Texas Class of 2014
The web site says 80% of aid in 2009-2010 was combo need/merit based - I don't know what all that entails or who qualifies, but it made me assume some additional money would go out after they had everyone's FAFSA. Could be wrong, though.

How does that make you feel? But seriously, we've talked about Vandy v UT on a couple of different threads.akili wrote:Well Texas is now a T14...

Gotcha. I don't know why but UT is going to wind up costing 40k less for me. So I guess it's obvious where both of us should be going. At least we'll get to hang out in Nashville with all the rest of the TLS n00bs for a weekend.akili wrote:It's pretty cool, no lie. It doesn't really change where I think I ought to be, but still. Haha yeah! And I'll definitely be at the UT ASW. It's a little cheaper for me, so a stellar ASW could sway things I suppose!lisjjen wrote:Gotcha. Ugh this is messing with my head. I've been offered a full ride at Carolina and I have serious difficulty when I consider turning that down for UT. This choice makes me sick to my stomach.

Oh that's right. You have in state tuition. That's so weird, we'll run into each other twice in two different states in two weeks, and we live 2,500 miles apart.akili wrote:Haha yeah! And I'll definitely be at the UT ASW. It's a little cheaper for me, so a stellar ASW could sway things I suppose!

Then chill and don't worry about doing what's right. Do what feels natural. You have two great choices.innernetp wrote:Yeah I feel dumb but I can't find anything.CMDantes wrote:Where did you find this fantastic piece of information?akili wrote:Well Texas is now a T14...

Emory and UNC moved down to 30 and those were my only other real options. That is really, really unfortunate.innernetp wrote:Yeah I feel dumb but I can't find anything.CMDantes wrote:Where did you find this fantastic piece of information?akili wrote:Well Texas is now a T14...

Thanks man. UT was just the dream for me and I'm at UNC for undergrad. I visited last week and had extremely mixed feelings. If I were going there on scholarship it would be a different story. :-\lisjjen wrote:Then chill and don't worry about doing what's right. Do what feels natural. Dropping or rising a spot or two does NOT matter. UNC is no worse a school because it dropped from 28 to 30. In fact, someone else just pointed out that their evaluation score or whatever is a 4.0 - higher than every school except the T14 + Vanderbilt. A full ride there is a fantastic option.innernetp wrote:Emory and UNC moved down to 30 and those were my only other real options. Sorry, that came out harsher than intended. I'll edit my post. I meant it more in a buck up and feel great about your options kind of way. I understand how it is with dream schools. I really wouldn't get too caught up in the rankings for real, though. I know it's easy to do, and I can't help it either. But seriously, with schools like Carolina, they will always rank lower than they should because of their in-state stipulations, etc. I mean, looking at undergrad, we all know Carolina's a better school than, say, Wake Forest or USC. Same with the law school.innernetp wrote::-\ No need for you to be embarrassed on my behalf. My point is that I probably WILL be going to Carolina and I absolutely love this school, and because of that I don't really like to see it slip in the rankings while the school I'm probably going to turn down becomes even dreamier. I am not married to the rankings, but it doesn't feel good when I'm in the midst of such a tough decision. Do you get where I'm coming from? I have no idea and if it's okay if you're not, but I don't really like being called an embarrassment by a fellow Heel.Tarheel10 wrote:

The tough thing is is that I want pretty badly to not work in the state of NC. I'm just ready to get out. At this point I'd like to wait a bit for California's economy to recover and then head over there, and meanwhile live somewhere like Miami or Atlanta. I visited UT thinking that I would fall in love with Austin, and I certainly did... but there were also things about it that I didn't love, too. Call me a huge whiner but I was actually pretty turned off by the traffic, and, though its temperature really agrees with me, I'm more drawn to the geography of the East Coast.

Re: IN AT The University of Texas Class of 2014
If you really don't want North Carolina, I wouldn't go. It seems like Vanderbilt is more of an ideal fit for you, and I see from my stalking that you got waitlisted there. Maybe a strong push to try to get off the waitlist? Also, just because you didn't qualify for the initial scholarship offers doesn't mean you can't get money by negotiating. I'd try to communicate with them and see if you can work something out. Good luck!innernetp wrote:I understand and agree with you.Tarheel10 wrote:Sorry, that came out harsher than intended. This is great news for UT. I wonder if GULC will keep its head up its ass and say Texas, and to a lesser extent UCLA, aren't peers.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
