For those of us who were held only recently, I don't expect Columbia to review our apps again until April 8th.

smdpnp why do you think so? Is something big (like a scholly deadline) happening prior to April 8th?

so idid some research (i posted this a few pages back) and found that people in the first held wave last year were sent emails around now asking for loci or some thing or other and then april 11 people began to be accepted off the held list. i think 8 or 9 posted getting in (i may have totally made that up). in a week or so if you were held (like me) and dont hear back its going to be a long winter

You were held "a while" ago and I've only heard crickets? From a similar submit date? Seriously Columbia, please check behind filing cabinets, my app is there! (And good luck, Bluecouch!)

I imagine this about the AdComm's desk:

There is an "inbox" of applications yet to be read. On the desk there are dozens of applications currently being considered that have not yet been decided on, submitted from all across the cycle timeline. Your application is included on the desk. Then there are four neat piles on an opposite table. To get from the desk to this table, the adcomm has to get up and actually bring your app over to the table and put it in one of the piles. The first pile is admits, the second is rejects. Early in the cycle they dislike putting apps into either of these piles because it's so deterministic. The other two are labeled "waitlist" and "hold." Waitlist is for candidates who are not as qualified as the admit pool, but would make good backups if those seats opened up. The Hold pile is reserved for candidates who are either strong in numbers but weak otherwise, or vice versa. These applications are borderline and the adcomm would rather admit the strong soft candidates and reject the numbers, but knows that they might later need these numbers so both sets are held. These applications won't be looked at until most of the applications on the desk have made it into the other three piles.

As long as you are still on the desk, you're fine. The only reason you would have to be worried is if you think you made it into one of these piles and the decision just hasn't gone out yet. However, you have no reason to think this is the case. They're still actively considering you.

This sounds very pacifying. Have you considered a career in psychology?

Thanks for the digging Anonymous4444! I was inspired to go back to the 2010-11 cycle, and found that there were no emails sent out to Helds to gauge interest, so it seems the emails were an innovation on CLS's part last year to perhaps increase yield. So I'm not sure if there'll be emails sent out this year since they were only tested last year...guess we'll all just have to sit tight and hope for the best for now!

Thanks for the digging Anonymous4444! I was inspired to go back to the 2010-11 cycle, and found that there were no emails sent out to Helds to gauge interest, so it seems the emails were an innovation on CLS's part last year to perhaps increase yield. So I'm not sure if there'll be emails sent out this year since they were only tested last year...guess we'll all just have to sit tight and hope for the best for now!

was reserved today (really surprised wasn't dinged!). What's the difference between being "held" and "reserved" ?

Held = they are still looking at your file and still haven't made a decision re: accept/wl/deny
Reserve = waitlist

wow, well this was a surprise. I cannot believe this but I just got in! I was held on 2/19!
