If you want to go to law school next year/actually want to be a lawyer, you should probably apply to a safety school. some schools don't have deadlines until feb. 15 and march 15. if you don't want to be a lawyer and were just avoiding the working world, see where your chips fall at the end of the application cycle.blhoward2 wrote:I think he has a decent shot but who the hell knows this cycle. I want to pursue legal academia. It's pretty hard to so outside of the T14, though certainly possible. If I don't get into any of the schools I applied to, I will reapply with a broader net next year.lawapps0502 wrote:If you want to go to law school next year/actually want to be a lawyer, you should probably apply to a safety school. some schools don't have deadlines until feb. 15 and march 15. if you don't want to be a lawyer and were just avoiding the working world, see where your chips fall at the end of the application cycle.blhoward2 wrote:I think he has a decent shot but who the hell knows this cycle. Hmmm. On second though, perhaps I should apply to some last minute safeties.

a 3.4 177 from HYP won't get dinged from all of those schools.

They flat out dinged? Not even a YP (YPs are WL)?
Wow. Michigan is VICIOUS this cycle. Looks like I'm out of the midwest.

Re: michigan 2010 applicants
Yes. I'd certainly consider a non-t14. I'm apprehensive about applying this late in the game, however. I'm afraid that I'd come across as unserious and disrespectful, putting in a last minute application. Maybe I'd be better off applying to a wide range of schools next year if I don't get into any of the schools I applied to this year?blhoward2 wrote:Would you consider going to a non-T14 school? You could probably still have a shot at some of them if you applied this late.

How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!
How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in
With gently smiling jaws!

Wow I am really scared now.
Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

Re: michigan 2010 applicants
I'm also interested in legal academia and I've chatted with a number of law professors in the field that interests me. I've been told that unless you'd be happy in another area of law you absolutely should not attend a school outside of the "top 14." Indeed, it's preferable to attend HYS (with Columbia, Chicago, Michigan, Berkeley, and NYU decent alternative choices). Legal academic hiring, much more than other academic hiring, is largely about where you went to school.Von Schlieffen wrote: I want to pursue legal academia. If your heart is really set on academia it might make sense to take a 1 year masters program in a related field (taught masters programs in the UK at Cambridge, Oxford, or UCL are relatively affordable, fun as heck, and you could still apply/get into a decent one this late) or to do some research/publishing in the upcoming year. That sort of experience will likely make your next round of applications more successful, will better position you on the academic job market, and will give you data that you can use to publish review articles as a law student.
