Knew a guy who did that and it didn't turn out so well for him. His job absolutely ruined his health early in his career, and he ended up alienating his family and working for a massive, universally hated bureaucracy for decades. Finally stood up to his boss and reunited with his kids late in life, but by then it was too late; he passed away shortly afterward. Can't recall if it was BigLaw or the Galactic Empire, but what's the difference, really? :P

Denied via email yesterday. Complete late November. Interviewed mid January. I felt that I bombed the interview, so I am not surprised, just a bit bummed.

With :) and only a :) ? I'd say you're in biiiiig trouble. Like, this-will-cost-you-Harvard trouble.

Or most likely, I think they'll see it, go  :?: and just ignore it, as I don't think it would warrant a big red sticker on your file. I know I'd be freaking out a little in your shoes, too, but I don't think it's a big deal at all and definitely don't think you should follow-up at all and make it look like it's a big deal.

At the same time, what would the harm of a brief follow up email be? It isn't a big deal and probably won't affect anything, but what's the downside to a quick followup? You don't want the AdComm to think you actually intended to send an emoticon, which is obviously horrendously unprofessional. Isn't it the policy to add all communications to your file? Do you really want an emoticon email in your file?

It can be something simple like-

"Dear Harvard Admissions,

Please disregard my previous email. It was accidentally sent to the wrong recipient."

yeah, I'd probably respond too, but maybe not this specifically. I'd go with something along the lines of "it was sent in error" probably

Because who wants to admit to Harvard that you intentionally use emoticons in daily life? Amiright?

OP, that was a rookie mistake. For shame.

I would probably pretend that it never happened. The people who manage that inbox are probably admin people with little decision making power.

What the fuck are they going to do, put in your file "Applicant Duck55 put an emoticon :) in message. Strange. (2/12/2015)."

Personally, if I'm a worker in my busy season, I wouldn't take the time to record a barely scrutable message with a high likelihood of having been sent in error. Especially given they are catching up with work due to the snow.

what does TCR mean? i've only ever seen it used in this forum!

And idk, I think "in error" is better because Harvard doesn't need to know that you actually meant to send that message to someone else. Whenever I've had a professor or dean send a message to the wrong person they always use the "in error" terminology. I think deliberate ambiguity happens a lot in professional contexts.

I personally would let it go. It's highly unlikely that people with decision making power are the ones sifting through admin emails. Anyways, you probably just made one of their employee's day; I bet she/he is really tempted to respond :? :P

But seriously, why draw any more attention to yourself over it? My two cents...

I think TCR means 'the common response', or 'the credited response' - at least that's how I read it.

Also OP I wouldn't worry. You're lucky it wasn't a ;)... then you might as well withdraw.

Yep, it's "the credited response."

OP, I would seriously let it go. I don't see how they would take the time to print your email or write a note about an emoticon (no matter how weird it is you used one). I do think it's a bad idea to write an email saying it was mistakenly sent to the wrong person or it was sent in error. Most people would probably disregard it, as they would have done if you didn't clarify. But I could see some arrogant, narcissistic, weirdo people seeing it as you making a careless mistake or error in judgment and marking that down if you drew their attention to it. I don't see how another email could help and it could only hurt by drawing attention to your accident. Just let sleeping dogs lie.

I'm not really seeing the issue with owning up to your mistake and moving on versus just leaving it there awkwardly and ignoring it, but I guess I'm not an adcomm. seems like a good q for spivey.

This seems like the most reasonable response IMO

My general feeling with emailing admissions offices is that less is more. I'm a big advocate of not sending "thank you" emails after skype interviews (including JS1s) because I think it's unnecessary and flooding an already overcrowded inbox. That being said, in this situation, I think a super brief followup along the lines of "message sent in error. please disregard." is appropriate

Although if your numbers are better than mine, maybe send something really long, explaining the history of you and your girlfriend using emoticons, etc...

As someone who has handled jobs with massive email responsibilities, I absolutely would NOT follow up. They literally have to handle droves of communication, and frankly this just isn't a big deal. Do them a favor and let it go.
Agree. Non-issue, they don't care. Not worth follow up.
