Just heard from Cornell about FA. 12k/year, not too bad given my numbers (median LSAT, 3.8x GPA), but still too expensive to attend. Should I negotiate with the school? I got 36k/year from another t20.

Hoping I hear something soon on the financial aid side soon (sent in materials 4/5)
Probably negotiate with the T20 using Cornell and see if they bump up then use that to negotiate with Cornell?Yumizzz wrote:Just heard from Cornell about FA. 12k/year, not too bad given my numbers (median LSAT, 3.8x GPA), but still too expensive to attend. The deposit deadline for Cornell is approaching. I doubt if I would have time to do this. Anyways, I really want to go to Cornell, and I would consider attending if they could offer me 20k/year.Aawaldrop wrote:Hoping I hear something soon on the financial aid side soon (sent in materials 4/5)

I would atleast try and if the T20 don't get back to you asap then go ahead and negotiate with Cornell. I don't think you have that much leverage. You could go the route of "if you give me X I will enroll and withdraw everywhere else now", but I've only heard anecdotally of that working and only a small percentage of time. Also, number one rule about negotiating is that you have to be willing to leave the table if it doesn't go your way.Yumizzz wrote:The deposit deadline for Cornell is approaching. Who has had luck negotiating with Cornell recently? I sent them an email to negotiate and haven't heard back.

Well, first they need to verify the materials for your request. This process takes 1-2 months.JamesDean1955 wrote:Who has had luck negotiating with Cornell recently? I sent them an email to negotiate and haven't heard back.

For those reserved, did you receive any confirmation when you emailed saying you wanted to stay on?

Called today Re: merit aid (haven't received anything about that yet)
Said that a bunch went out (as we saw) and to check back Monday if I don't receive anything. So, I guess that means they are at least moving.

Yeah, they're finally making some headway with FA. I received mine this morning via email--$105k, not bad.Aawaldrop wrote:Called today Re: merit aid (haven't received anything about that yet)

What's the max scholarship amount per year one can receive at this stage - $45k/year? I'm guessing $50k/year isn't happening at this point?

$120k is the most I've seen since the Dean's Scholarships ($50k) went out in January/February.JamesDean1955 wrote:What's the max scholarship amount per year one can receive at this stage - $45k/year? I'm guessing $50k/year isn't happening at this point?

There was a $150k awarded two weeks ago to a TLSer. They didn't post it on here or LSN because they're trying to keep it on the DL, but that amount is not off the table.ph5354a wrote:$120k is the most I've seen since the Dean's Scholarships ($50k) went out in January/February.JamesDean1955 wrote:What's the max scholarship amount per year one can receive at this stage - $45k/year? How do you know I'm not?
The other side of that conversation, though, is that we have no idea how they got that award. They have lower numbers than mine with no comparable scholarship. I sent them a full-ride at UVA and the best they could do is $120k. Thus, I have no idea how to get up to that $150k mark.

I think it's just luck. Someone must've turned down a Dean's and they decided to pick someone else to get that amount. They just happened to pick them instead of you.TripTrip wrote:The other side of that conversation, though, is that we have no idea how they got that award.
