Are international students also eligible for need based aid?

Re: Cornell 2011 applicants
Hey all, I've been following this thread recently (admitted 3/25) and am also confused about financial aid...
Is it really the case that aid is a combination of need and "merit"? I'm lucky enough to have parents that are pretty well off, but not to the point where financial aid wouldn't be useful. I've been planning to apply for financial aid all along, but I've sort of been assuming that I wouldn't get any, given this situation. BUT i do have decent stats (3.5/174)...would this actually help my case? I'm going to apply, so I guess I'll find out, but I'm curious what to expect. Are my stats going to be taken into consideration when aid is meted out? Thanks in advance!

Yes it's both merit and need based.newbienew wrote:Hey all, I've been following this thread recently (admitted 3/25) and am also confused about financial aid...

Thanks, NorCal. I assume this applies just to the Cornell "institutional grants"? Or does it apply to the federal loans, too? Is there any possible harm in applying for both? Maybe a different way to ask it: might either group lessen their aid award with the knowledge that I've applied for the other?

As long as your credit isn't completely jacked, loans will not be affected. The amount you can take out will be conditional on how much need/merit based aid you received, however. The estimated budget for Cornell is $72,000; so let's say you receive a yearly $20k 'institutional grant' which would then only allow you take out loans up to $52,000--covering the difference.

Re: Cornell 2011 applicants
I'd like to say fuck Cornell one time.
I submitted my application on January 31st. That same day, I filled out a request to have a Dean's Certification mailed to them. Today, 3/30, my status continued to say Still Processing, but the date changed to today's. Later, I received an email and my status changed to Incomplete. The email said that I had failed to provide them with a Dean's Certification.
I sent an email back saying that the form had been mailed to them. I said I do not understand why it took two months to notify me that it had not arrived, but I feel like they are stealing my $80 application fee by waiting until just before seat deposits are due to tell me of this problem. I know my application was late, but that is no excuse for them to wait this long to tell me about an error on their end. I also forwarded them the receipt from my undergrad that was dated 1/31 saying my request had been received and was being processed. It was the same email receipt I received after each other request, and no other school ever had an issue.
I was very interested in Cornell, but this has kind of made me feel like they just wanted my $80 app fee and were never interested in me at all.

Re: Cornell 2011 applicants
First, I'm sorry about the reserve, but I am kind of annoyed that I haven't even gone into review yet despite being Complete on 3/3... I don't know what they are doing up there in Ithaca. I'm not an auto-reject or an auto-admit and while based on my numbers I guess it could be a YP thing I don't think they would YP me as both my parents attended Cornell Law School and have donated regularly since (in fact based on their snail-like admissions pace I suggested the next time my parents donate they should specify that their money should be put towards hiring more staff in the admissions officeBBeauty wrote:Just placed on reserve.

Wow im sorry as well that your app hasnt gone into review yet. Hopefully this means you will be admitted instead of Reserved when your app finally goes IRchasgoose wrote:First, I'm sorry about the reserve, but I am kind of annoyed that I haven't even gone into review yet despite being Complete on 3/3... Um, complete 2/3 here. Should I call? Or is this just typical of slow Cornell?

Re: Cornell 2011 applicants
I havent seen anyone waiting that long... I remember earlier ITT people had 2.5-3 weeks between complete and IR, but I guess it looks like some others are looking at about a month between complete and IR now. I would call if were you. 2 months sitting at complete doesn't seem right. I called GULC back in december when I hadn't heard in a while and I had no status checker movement (I had applied ED), and they expedited me (to the WL), but at least it got the ball rolling.FutureInLaw wrote:Um, complete 2/3 here. Seriously? What are you waiting for?
