Dear Berkeley,

As I write this letter I think back to the moment many months ago when I spritzed my application with electronic scent and entrusted my confession of love to the internet. At the time I thought that nothing could be more painful than your scorn.

My worst fears were realized, Berkeley, when you rejected me without even seeking out your family's advice. Yet, I have since learned that there are crueler ways to treat a tender heart. Fourteen schools have not even had the courtesy to respond to me. They do not call, they do not write - for over a month none of them has even looked at my application.

So thank you, Berkeley. Thank you for having the kindness and mercy to tell me how you truly feel. Your letter was so sweetly worded that I scarcely felt that I was being rejected. It reminded me again of why I fell for you in the first place. Yes, we CAN be friends, Berkeley. In fact, I heard that you are having a party in a few weeks... oh but of course, that is for admitted students. Well, perhaps the next weekend?

Eternally yours,
pedestrian

Alas, the cock-up resulteth from the tutelage of a British English Comp prof. Ye humble servant thusly hath no hope of admission to YLS and must instead pin his hopes to ye, a mere 221 miles away. With the articulation of Sir William Shakespeare, methinks the interview was aceth. Yet, thy held the application for months. As a bright and warm January day dawned (the 29th) a message was received that caused great anticipation-a decision had been mailed! Mr. Fed-Ex, upon the multi-colored, not brown, chariot was awaited in much the same way wives would await the return of their husbands from sea upon the widow's walk of yore. No black box arriveth. Oh VLS, if thy has in fact relegated this humble servant to wait-list purgatory, I implore ye to reconsider. If someone driveth fastesth ye could hand deliver the box and forgiveness bestowed. Failing that, please call Asha at Ye Olde Yale School of Law and remindeth her that since Wills got married to that smashing gal and Harry partied royally in thy City of Sin all things British are now acceptable and to wage war on a simple . is bloody wrong.

Hath you heard yet from those impudent strumpets?

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that numbers don't define
I dreamed adcomms would be forgiving

Dear Notre Dame,

It appears as though my offer to return to the catholic church in my "why ND?" essay was not enough to have you overlook my GPA.
