I was talking to a male friend who's currently at law school, and he suggested that he didn't think law school was the right choice for me because I'm too emotional. Is this sort of judgment something anyone else has dealt with? If so, how did you respond to it?

Seriously though, that was a kinda sucky thing for him to say. I haven't had anyone say something like that to me, but I'd probably call the person out for it if they did. I think it can even be done in a fairly non-confrontational way - if it happens again, just say something like, "You know, you probably wouldn't be saying that if I were a guy." If he's a decent person, he'll probably appreciate it if you gently point out his biases.
definitely TCR - as annoying/rude/shallow as that comment was, if you respond in an 'emotional' way then he may view it as evidence to support his judgement. I would also just ask him why emotions would be a disability in law school. If he's forced to explain his view, he may realize how redonkulous he's being and apologize (or at least not say dumb stuff like that again haha). Good luck dealing with him!!
I have no non confrontational way of dealin with this shit. All I have to add is, he's definitely not a friend if he said that to you. I probably would have said "fuck you too" but I'm not a nice person.
Eh, that's not productive though. Now, I know nothing about the guy in question, but sometimes perfectly well-intentioned people can say something sexist/racist/whatever - we all have implicit biases, and that doesn't make us terrible people. I've nonconfrontationally pointed out male friends' biases and they've appreciated it; I've had people point out my own biases, and I appreciate it as well because it helps me be more mindful. I doubt I'd have been as receptive if they told me to eff off.

Now, if she points it out and he gets defensive, THEN I'd be much less sympathetic
Yeah, I think that's a good point. I'm always a little horrified but eventually grateful when people point out my own biases to me.

If anything, I think his comment has further cemented my desire to attend law school, because this is a sentiment (that emotions and law can't mix) that I've come across before and I think it's really damaging and needs to be changed. So I'm going to continue being as emotional as ever and plan to rock law school.
If emotions and law didn't mix, laws would have been passed and trashed a long time before they were. Slavery, Womens' Rights, Civil Rights, LGBT, and so on.

It's good you question this behind the scenes on the forums, however, if it were me, home-dude woulda been slammed. I have a few associates and friends who see nothing wrong with their biases, and I consider it an honor to "school them" as it were.

This may be old knowledge, but I don't care about repeating it: Learn now to love yourself every day. If not, you'll be eaten alive in this "guy" world that encompasses law. As you can see by the numbers, rarely do we hit more than 50% of attendance....much less holding leadership/executive positions at firms...MUCH LESS making the same amounts as the menz. Loving yourself is the first step to jumping those hurdles.

It may be old knowledge, but it's still a reminder I really appreciate. Thanks!

Women's shoes are a torture device that God put on this Earth just to punish me.
Really?? Most heels suck, but a lot of other shoes (flats, etc.) can be really comfy.

This is a safe space. Homicidal urges are welcome.
I really appreciate this sentiment.
Aw sorry I wasn't here! Homicidal urges = okay as long as you don't act on them.

You haven't acted on them, have you?

Anyway, I hereby prescribe watching the Boy's Club episode of P&R tonight to make you feel better. It'll help, I promise!

But it is really nice to have this thread. TLS is such a reminder that law is still a male dominated field.
I wrote a whole welcome manual for October waiters explaining the Compendium culture, then today EVERYTHING FELL APART. It's been total anarchy and everything I thought I knew no longer applies

You think it's worth it to go back and reread? I saw the end of everything, I think.
Yes! But only because I'm so proud of the sonnet
