I think this is important to think about and I agree with you. It is so hard to quantify the edge each individual will get from the school they attend. The question for me when I look at each schools ends up being: if I work hard, get good grades and do all of the things you mentioned, how do I assess which group I will end up in? And if a land a job will I earn at the 75th end of the pay scale? This is something I am really struggling with.Drowninmyowntears wrote:Look, determining employment rates and bar passage rates is worth it to some degree. However, at a certain point, it's not on the school, its on you. If the majority of people who graduate UCI are getting jobs and passing the bar, then it's very possible for any person who attends to do so. At a certain point you have to ask yourself if you are going to be in that 77% and bust your butt to study for the bar and pass the first time, or will you be in the 23%? (IDK if those are the actual percentages, just examples). Jobs aren't all about where you go. Sure, a law degree from Harvard is going to help you a lot more than one from UCI, but I'm pretty sure once you get outside the top 14-20 schools, its about how hard you work, the grades you get, the networking you do, which job market you are aiming for, etc. If UCI has a 69% employment rate, that certainly does not mean that you as an individual attending UCI will have a 69% chance of getting a job. How ridiculous. Have confidence in yourselves people!

I agree with you! I think a lot of it depends on what type of law you go into to be honest...If high pay is one of the most important things for you in your career then that's probably something you'll want to address with the career advisor people as soon as you can.idontknow1 wrote:I think this is important to think about and I agree with you. Probably the scariest thing to think of, you can't really predict what percentile of the class you'll be. Some people study like crazy and still don't end up at the top.idontknow1 wrote:I think this is important to think about and I agree with you. Man! UCI is taking forever for me! Their website says decision in about 4 weeks after complete, but I'm running at over 10 weeks now :/
I called them a few days ago and they said I should get an email and/or a snail mail about my decision. Do both acceptances/denials come via email? Starting to doubt my chances now..

When did you go complete? There should have been an e-mail notifications once UC Irvine doesn't have a status checker.

Did they give you any additional details regarding the timeliness of the e-mail & hard mail that you should receive soon?

When is the ASW? Will there be more than one? I hear there is a travel stipend of ~ 500 $ if you are coming from far away?

Is there a flat stipend for all out-of-towners? Or is the stipend incremental depending on how far away you are coming from? Detailed in your acceptance packages I assume?iguazu wrote:10-11 April and yes, I'm taking advantage of that moneyHarry_Pluxen wrote:When is the ASW? Will there be more than one? I did the travel stipend thing already (applied it to an individual visit). Basically it covers hotels (you chose from a list they give you... all really nice places), airfare, and gas ($.57 per mile). You just send them receipts with your name on them and they will reimburse up to $500. I stayed in a hotel for 3 nights and drove from Santa barbara and got the full $500.rion91 wrote:Harry_Pluxen wrote:Is there a flat stipend for all out-of-towners? If you have any other questions about the travel stipend, I can try to answer them since I've already done it.

Chemerinsky said that the ranking could improve because part of it is based on students’ employment in the legal field within nine months after graduation. That number is expected to climb to at least 84 percent this year, he said. That’s up from 64 percent in 2013.
Corroborates that it isn't including the jd advantaged jobs (was 69% if included)

Re: UC Irvine c/o 2018
I wrote about my personal scholarly interests and goals for practicing law and the specific programs at UCI that I thought would help me accomplish those things. I would say it plays a HUGE role as a school doesn't want to accept someone who has no particular reason for wanting to go there. if you don't take that part seriously they will assume you are unlikely to matriculate and it won't be enticing for the school to admit you.annzhang151515 wrote:what did you guys wrote for "Interest in UC Irvine" part? does it play a big role... ?

I tied in strengths that I displayed in my softs together with Dean Chems & UCI's goal of building a strong nationally renowned law school. I discussed how my interests & accomplishments attracted me to UCI and how I wanted to be a part of building a terrific law school.annzhang151515 wrote:what did you guys wrote for "Interest in UC Irvine" part? does it play a big role... ?
I spoke with admissions early in the cycle as I was preparing to write my essays. UCI admissions said that if there is anything that they place weight on after GPA & LSAT, it is the why UCI law essay. The girl I spoke with indicated that, in terms of importance, it was probably on equal footing with the personal statement at the very least.

I just visited the school today, and I can second that they consider the writing samples to be very important. Not only do they want to get to know you a little better, but they want to see your writing style and how well you can write in general. I talked about how strong their clinics were and how that was important to me, and how they want to teach practical skills both in and out of the classroom.Harry_Pluxen wrote:I tied in strengths that I displayed in my softs together with Dean Chems & UCI's goal of building a strong nationally renowned law school.
