Re: UC Irvine 2011 Applicants
I emailed UCI about a classroom visit for next week, and this is the reply - looks like we're going to have homework...
"The schedule on Admitted Students’ Day is pretty full, so unfortunately there isn’t any scheduled “down” time that would allow for a class visit. On top of that, some of the classes that normally take place on Thursday are being moved around so that our current students can participate in the day’s activities to the extent possible. One of the activities scheduled for the day is a mock class, which will be taught by a professor. Reading material will be sent out soon to everyone so that you can be prepared for class in advance. There will also be a faculty panel and two students panels for you to get to hear from the law school community. Finally, there are plenty of activities scheduled throughout the day (and into the evening) in which you will be able to interact with our current students to ask questions."
I'm pretty happy that they're trying to include as many current students as possible.

I just got a phone call from one of the current students to answer any questions. Got me pretty jazzed at the possibility of attending UCI.ku1185 wrote:I just RSVP'd yesterday and got confirmation today. Congrats to the recent admits!!
Regarding ASD I don't know the whole schedule but I know there is an "after-party" planned at Dave & Busters, which should be a blast.
Looking forward to meeting some of you next Thursday!

I never saw anything in previous posts about negotiating scholarships. Does anyone know if UCI negotiates? I have a better offer from a peer school and would hope for UCI to match it.

It was F*cking Verizon Wireless asking me about my service. If my office had a window, I'd jump out.
and my phone even says where it's from, and it said Irvine, CA. Needless to say, I got trolled hard.

Re: UC Irvine 2011 Applicants
I asked for a merit scholarship reevaluation, because I have 87 and 120K at WUSTL and IUB, and it wouldn't make sense for me to choose UCI with only 1/3. They said they're completely drained on funds.
I'm really sad about this. I'm unsure about whether or not to go to ASD. I don't want to fall in love with a school I can't go to.
Any advice? It would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard that schools have more scholarship funding once the first deposit dates start to pass. I'd go to ASD, and keep trying for more $$. Who knows what they will say in three weeks.lawandi wrote:I asked for a merit scholarship reevaluation, because I have 87 and 120K at WUSTL and IUB, and it wouldn't make sense for me to choose UCI with only 1/3. Re: UC Irvine 2011 Applicants
Depends on your hard-line stance on $$ in relation to your school choice. Did you apply knowing that you needed to accept the best financial offer, and knew that law school wasn't feasible without a substantial scholarship? Or were you looking to make a more cumulative decision, based on the education you wanted, your job prospects, personal choices, as well as money? Yes, seeing the school and loving it without 100% certainty about the cost is hard, but at least you'll know you have all the facts in front of you when you make your choice.lawandi wrote:I asked for a merit scholarship reevaluation, because I have 87 and 120K at WUSTL and IUB, and it wouldn't make sense for me to choose UCI with only 1/3. And as far as money being available later, that's possible. Can't speak for UCI in particular, but my current law school friends/graduates had experience with getting more money from their schools after the deposit deadlines.

Re: UC Irvine 2011 Applicants
Thanks for all of your advice. Money is a really big factor in my decision, as I'm funding this completely on scholarships and loans. But I know that I would be 100% happier at Irvine than I would be at WUSTL. Still, I'm sure I could adjust to St Louis life if needed. For some reason, this seems like a good time to base a decision on pragmatism rather than what will make me happy.
But IFP, that is an interesting point. I might as well go to ASD so that I can make a fully informed decision.

Re: UC Irvine 2011 Applicants
Other than the 1/3 tuition offer with the acceptance, I haven't heard about my financial aid package. Though I did get the online financial aid log-in info and notification that they have my FAFSA. I'm assuming the monetary breakdown will come in the next week or two.hawaii wrote:When did you guys recieve your financial aid packages?

Re: UC Irvine 2011 Applicants
In the "congrats" letter you receive in the mail a week or two after the phone call, it will tell you what the stipulations are for your award. So far we have heard of a 3.0 stipulation and a "good standing stipulation". My award was increased, but it only said so in hand writing from the asst dean on the second page of the letter.hawaii wrote:When did you guys recieve your financial aid packages?

So no one has heard regarding need-based aid yet? We only know about the 1/3 scholarship and any additional merit awards?

You never know if funds could open up later if students who received extra money still decide to go elsewhere . . .but you also might want to check if you would be in consideration should that occur.lawandi wrote:I asked for a merit scholarship reevaluation, because I have 87 and 120K at WUSTL and IUB, and it wouldn't make sense for me to choose UCI with only 1/3.
