Anyone who was placed on hold hear back yet?

I'm a fan of somewhere near the Gold Coast, Magnificent Mile, River North, etc ... like right where Loyola is located!! Hahaa. The problem with the areas I'm describing is the expensiveness. Though, if you can cut some kind of deal, then good. I'm trying to find good deals now. Pretty difficult to pull off.

The two areas you described are perfect, as well. And if you can get them on the cheap, then that's even better. Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park both are great. Any of those places work. I'm not the biggest fan of the West or South side of Chi. That's way over generalizing, of course. It's all about East and North!

However, to each his own. So you're going to go to Kent? Where are you in the decision-making process? I love the idea of Kent, though as of now, there isn't much of a debate w/ a certain amount of niice $ offered from Loyola and none from Kent. We'll see how everything plays out, as I'm working on that issue.

Pretty much everything looks like Kent right now. They made me a very good offer and it makes sense on a personal level (connections in the Midwest) not to mention I've heard good things about the school, employment prospects not withstanding. I have about two small chance scenarios that don't put me in Chi-town next year.

I'm from the Chicagoland area. Kent is excellent and gives you a great education and great shot. I was going back and forth between Kent and Loyola for a long time, as other threads indicate. That might even be the case in the coming weeks, though as of now, the $ Loyola offered is too great to go to Kent for sticker.

I'm also waiting to hear back from some much higher ranked schools. Unlikely, though you nevver know!! Good luck with your decision, and let me know how everything goes.

Loyola offered me $5k merit + $7k "law grant"--Kent offered me $15k. Does anyone know if the $7k grant is something I might expect from all schools I appy to (i.e. government money rather than school specific) or are grants specific to each school?

From what I can tell, grants are specific to each school. For "need-based aid," I think some just give the loans (as in, you pay allllll of it back) and base the rest off merit or trying to get a student for whatever reason to go to that school. As I'm sure you know, too, grants do not have to be paid back. They're equivalent to scholarships but just are not called such. I don't think grants should be expected at all schools, but I suppose you never know.

I really wanted to live close to the school to make my life easier, but i really don't know much about the Chicago neighborhoods excepot that Lincoln Park and Wrigleyville are supposedly popular. I hear the nightlife/shopping is better there, are they really far from Kent/West Loop area? What are other advantages to not living near school? Couldn't one just hop the metro to go out? I guess i just really don't know much about Chicago at all since I had never planned to leave the NYC tri-state..haha

Im in the same boat about housing and really think i might end up biting the bullet with money to live close to school, but the area around kent is not the best neighborhood to have fun in, lincoln park, lake view, wrigleyville, wicker park are more fun but are gonna take anywhere from 20-30 minutes on an L to get to school. PErsonally i'm thinking i'll ride the L to drink and walk to school, but i'm really torn as well.

The neighborhoods that would match up to the NY ones would seem to be Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park, since neighborhood feel is combined with busy and popular. I'm a big fan of those neighborhoods but even more of a fan of being downtown -- near (but not literally in, as that'd be some craazy money) River North and the Gold Coast. The West Loop is an artsy area and fine during the day, but right around where Kent is at, all the stuff is closed by 8-10 pm, though you're still only a few miles away from the fun places. Nonetheless, you wouldn't want to be walking that distance. I don't know this exact info, but you can look up all the different buses, rails, locations, etc., in conjunction with where you'd want to live and where fun places are at. Google can do wonders. Good luck, and if you come to Chicago .. it's amaazing. I love this city so much.

I submitted my app in mid-Jan, have been in review since 2/7. Getting nervous!

I also applied to Loyola and Depaul, was denied from both. Waitlisted at Northeastern. Accepted to some 3rd tiers with full rides. I have a 3.83, 157. Not a hot LSAT score, but I didn't go to a shabby undergrad school, I had really great recommendations from deans, and (according to them) a really unique and solid essay. I'm also currently in a master's program while working full time. Worried I'll also get denied from Chicago Kent. Has anyone with decent scores and decent softs been denied?

I got in with your LSAT score and a SIGNIFICANTLY lower GPA but I'm also a URM with softs. I was waitlisted at DePaul, accepted to Loyola with $, and accepted the Kent with $. I think you probably have a good chance, if you don't get in it might be because you applied a little bit later in the application cycle.

Does Kent have a good reputation for IP/technology law? I talked to a student ambassador who called me and she said she didn't really know. Kind of disconcerting since it seems like TLS indicated they have a strong technology law offering. Anyone got any thoughts/info? Thanks!

This is a link to the course descriptions for all of the electives offered by Kent. There are quite a few electives that directly deal with IP issues. By my count there are about 20 or so. Looking at other schools that is a larger number of IP electives, at least for the schools I applied to.

The best places to live in Chicago are Lakeview, Lincoln Park, and the Gold Coast. I personally lived in Lakeview, which is also referred to as Boystown (the epicenter of Chicago gay life).

If you are from NYC, LA, SF, or Washington DC, you will find Chicago to be cheap. If you come from any other city, you will think Chicago is expensive. $1,000 is the going rate for 1 BR's. If you live downtown you will pay that and much more. In addition, if you have a car, you can add another $150-$250 for garage parking. Downtown is also really boring. Especially the West Loop (financial area, do not move there). I lived in Presidential Towers. It is nice, but a complete bore. Everything shuts down after 8:00 pm. Dead on the weekend. Also, it is all cement. No trees. Imagine Manhattan.

Lakeview, Lincoln Park, and the Gold Coast are cool because you can street park if you have a car. It's not always easy finding a spot, but it works. These areas are pricey too, but you can find some decent deals for a studio/1br if you look hard enough. It also feels less like of a "big city" in these areas. People walking their dogs, parks, jogging, etc. If you live in Lakeview, Lincoln Park, there are express buses that go on Lake Shore Drive. This can be an alternative to the train if you want to live near the lake/beach. This route also provides quick access to the law school which is downtown. I prefer this over the train. If you live by the train, live by the red line - addisson, sheffield, belmont....

Other areas of Chicago are Rogers Park, Andersonville, Edgewater. These areas are north of Lakeview. Not as exciting, but they can be okay.

Bucktown (Logan Square) is another hip area. Old Town is cool.

The South Loop might also be an option, but it is kind of boring down there too....

All in all, you can find a studio for $750-1,100....A 1b for $800-$1,400....

Depaul had me on review since last week....03/16....went admitted via status checker and email today.

Loyola waitlisted me last week.

Chicago Kent had me on review since last week...03/16....went admitted via status checker today.

JMLS had me on review since 03/08.....went admit via status checker today.


Still waiting to hear from U of I, and Wisconsin.....

been outta undergrad for a year, had good work experience while in undergrad at a small business....totally surprised that i got in where i got in....thought the low GPA would put me in a shitty spot....not to mention I took the lsat 3x (151 in Dec 09, 157 in Sept 10, 161 in Dec 10).


Excited as shit regardless! Now to decide Kent vs. Depaul.

Strange, I've gotten 2 calls. One after I was accepted in December and then again 2 weeks ago.

They said if I had any more questions to call the Admissions office and they would put me on with a student if I wanted. Apparently they typically have at least one in the office, if not they will tell you when they will be in if you have a "student life" sort of question.
