Re: What's up with Arizona State (ASU)?
Admitted via email this Monday. More info would be forthcoming in the mail, it said.
I'm already headed to UA's Preview Day this weekend. It would take some work, but do you all think it would be worthwhile to swing by ASU's admitted students day this Friday? I wish I had gotten the admit email *before* booking cheap airfare to Tucson. The change reservation fees to come a day earlier to hit up ASU would be substantial.

How likely is it that you'll go to one of the AZ schools? If AZ is at the top of your list, I'd certainly plan to stop by ASU while you're visiting. If it's not so likely, save your money. Or plan to visit some other time...missinglink wrote:Admitted via email this Monday. More info would be forthcoming in the mail, it said.

I will be at the ASW this weekend. Is anyone attending the dinner Thursday evening? I will be in khakis and a Polo most likely. My height, or lack thereof (im about 5'4), usually makes me stand out, so if you see me, please feel free to say hi.

This will be my 3rd ASW, and at the previous two there were around ~50 potential students. THere is a dinner Thursday followed by the all day event friday, that is why people are reffering to it as weekend.

5:00: approach dean berman's house just across border of phoenix into scottsdale. all the streets have nearly the same name which is probably intended to minimize the chance that poor people can find homes of wealthy people. i am frustrated.
5:05: arrive. house is very nice. appears to be trampoline in the ground surrounded by grass. very enticing. no fence around it. wonder if i hurt myself, can i sue dean berman? mental note to google 'trampoline torts' and 'impulsive behaviors of ADHD americans with disabilities act'
5:10: NOTE: dean soto or berman have good taste in caterers. weird food and good normal food. friendly service. no beer is rip off.
5:15: found and outed msbeautifulbasham as an internet nerd; possibly outed msbeautifulbasham's "friend"; prob was rude- rude feels good, like a lawyer
5:20: dean berman begins speaking about choosing asu
6:00: dean berman invites dean soto to speak
6:01: dean berman resumes talking about clinics, programs, and partnerships that asu law offers
6:30: time to go home. call out to msbeautifulsham that im sorry for outing her. ask service employee who has 'tea pouring' responsibilities one last time about the beer. he recommends bringing a flask next time. disappointed about no free booze but always appreciate good advice.
6:35 leave satisfied that asu is a wonderful opportunity to study, be involved with the city and meet great new people.
6:36: make mental note to type indirect reference to outing TLSer at reception onto TLS itself. that this might be construed as a double reverse outing could be seen as irony or rudeness. both things seem lawyerly, should do this

So...maybe...really really ridiculously good looking?
So, how many people were there? The house was nice I presume... Was it a seated dinner or was it more standing hor douevres? Any new information presented or was it the same ol' sales pitch?

Do schools host multiple events like this or did non-attendees miss the boat?

i think they host multiple events but this may have been the final one. however, the only thing you really missed out on is the opportunity to meet yer future classmates when they are pleasant and excited.. before law school breaks them into tiny sharp pieces. anything else you missed you can catch up on by visiting the campus on yer own- believe me, dean berman or soto or whoever is more than happy to spend as much time talking to you as you need and they will set you up with a student ambassador who will give you any pro tips you missed.bug wrote:Do schools host multiple events like this or did non-attendees miss the boat?
40 or so people? i dunno im bad at counting. no new information (for me anyway). like i said above, it seems that everyone who knows anything will be 100% available to you when you are accepted. it was hors d'oeuvres style- i ate a carrot that was white. it was sweeter than a baby carrot.quickquestionthanks wrote:Ssshhh.aIvin adams wrote: all the streets have nearly the same name which is probably intended to minimize the chance that poor people can find homes of wealthy people.

frankly i felt sabotaged by the food. i have a DSM V condition called FKP (fat kid personality), which means i cant stop eating available food. also the first item on the buffet was broccoli so i ended up spitting florettes at anyone who tried to introduce themselves to me. networking fail

Anyway, what were the other student like? Were they super-chill, gunner-ish, total tool-bags?
and we all agree the ASU undergrad population is smokin'. How were the law school ladies?

For those admitted in the last couple weeks, did ASU extend your seat deposit deadline?

i think i read on a dummy website somewhere (when i was trying to confirm the deposit deadline on google without my paperwork) that you have until 3 weeks after yer acceptance if its after april 1st. not sure if this is the case but it must be something like that. call kathy! she probably misses youAsexualChocolate wrote:For those admitted in the last couple weeks, did ASU extend your seat deposit deadline?

$15K for the first year. I'm out of state and was told at the ASW and in the admission packet that it wouldn't be hard to become an in-state resident after the first year assuming I register to vote, register my vehicle, move my bank account to Arizona, etc.Burgstaller04 wrote:get any scholy info yet?msbeautifulbasham wrote:YAYYYYYYYYY!!! Re: What's up with Arizona State (ASU)?
Be careful with this. They told me the same thing last year. Though I haven't began the application process, I have heard nothing but stories of its difficulty. After you show you registered to vote, registered your vehicle, moved your bank account, got an AZ phone number, lived here for 12 consecutive months (this often means not visiting home or other OOS places for more than 2-3 weeks during said 12 month period), are not included as a dependent on your parents' tax return for 2009 and 2010, worked in AZ during the summer of 2011, and are were not provided with any support whatsoever by your parents during 2008 and 2009, the residency office's analysis becomes very subjective and you can really be denied for any evidence of a lack of intent to remain in the state. IMO, after listening to students who have gone through the process, it's far from "easy." One described it as a 50/50 shot even if you do all the aforementioned things right. There will be workshops and 2/3Ls to talk to once you enroll, which will make the process easier. But, avoid making your decision on whether or not to attend based on the Dean's opinion of the difficulty of the process. In calculating cost, I would assume residency for 3L but not 2L.
