You won't have access to it until you get your westlaw password at orientation.

TWEN is similar to Blackboard, which you may have used in undergrad. It's a place for professors to post messages, reading material, etc. Each professor sets it up a little differently, and some don't use it at all.

Some of the student organizations use it, too. TWEN = The West Educational Network, or something like that, and it's run by Westlaw. Thus, betasteve's info.

plucker's is off greenville. it's the quintessential smu wing place, although it is a chain. They deliver to campus until 2 a.m.

question for you, nontrad or any other 2L+s: what was your impression of orientation? boring as hell? informative? too short, too long, just right? any particular parts you found enjoyable or helpful? any parts you detested or found to be boring and useless?

It was nice to meet classmates. I really enjoyed meeting my mentors, who were great. (BTW, I'm mentoring this year, so get ready for some inspired greatness, too.)

Just like anything run by administration, it definitely had parts that sucked. First day will start with checking in and taking pictures, followed by breakfast on the Quad. Should be nice and steamy, since it's been 1,000 degrees here for a couple of weeks now.

Then you'll have plenty of boring meetings where they talk about various aspects of what you're going to do. The Dean will give a rousing three-hour speech on Constitutionalism and The Law. (not quite three hours, but it feels like it) More meetings, lunch on the Quad, more meetings, an Organization Fair in the Pit where you can meet reps from all the different student orgs (there are two in particular I can recommend, if anyone wants to know.)

After that, the evening dinner will involve some real live attorneys giving real life inspirational rah-rah speeches. And trying to get you to join DAYL and the Dallas Bar.

Day two is more of the same.

I remember day one as being brutal, because it started at at 8:00 and we weren't done until almost 9:00 that night. Day two was not quite as bad, but did include a meeting after lunch that lasted about an hour too long.

In short, orientation is what you'd expect. A few good things, mostly boring things, but a necessary evil.

Just got a copy of your orientation schedule - looks a bit lighter than last year's, especially on Day One. Good for you guys, maybe they listened to complaints about last year.

I talked to someone in the enrollment offices (since the FA office is very hard to get a hold of...) and they said that our refund might not get here until early September. Please tell me she had no idea what she was talking about.

I don't think she does. The loans have already hit the accounts, and the FA info clearly states that when there is a credit in the account, they will issue a direct deposit refund within two business days.

She sounded half retarded, but basically she said that the school has 14 business days from the first day of class to deposit the remainder of the direct plus loan into a student's account. When I asked her how we frugal law students were going to survive, her exact response was "You are going to have to carry yourself through early September."

I am a little worried that I won't be getting that large sum of money until two weeks after school starts, but hopefully she is wrong and was confused about what I was talking about.
