Called! Spoke to a very nice woman there, she said it means nothing and it was sent based on submission dates, just to keep people who applied early informed and apologize for the long wait.

she also said Dean Z has posted a blog post about this very issue because there was so much confusion!!

So the next year, and for every year following, I sent an email to everyone who had applied relatively early in the season, so that their file had already had at least one round of review by file readers, but for whom, for any one of a number of possible reasons, we had not yet reached a decision. The email says, in essence, thank you for your patience; we are sorry we haven’t yet sent you a decision; we are attempting to strike a balance between making decisions as quickly as possible with making the best decisions we can.

I hope they figured out that the email they sent, that was intended to destress us, ultimately caused so much panic and chaos that she had to post a blogpost that ended in a chill the fuck out lemur. She should have just sent me the lemur yesterday.

so basically if you didnt get the email and your status checker date is before whatever the latest date was for people who received an email, a decision has been made, you just dont know it yet

and if you got the email either she cant make a decision on you, or different readers of your file have different thoughts on you

it's not, though...some people got the emails and got in the same day, or the next day (as proven by TLS). A hold means "we will definitely not be giving you a decision in the next few weeks". Some people will be 'held' in that they won't hear back for a while, but that's not what the email is meant to say. It just means "sorry, we know you're still waiting, and we're still looking at your app."

I think Michigan is being extra careful about yield protection this year. Most of the people who got the email yesterday have match to auto admit numbers.

Just asked the question on the blog that all of us who did not receive the e-mail are wondering. Clearly outing myself, and will probably take this post down eventually, since it would appear that Dean Z is a lurker on TLS!

I am now dreading opening my mailbox. Ugh. To find and envelope from U Mich only to discover a rejection would be so painful. I'd so much rather an e-mail saying I was getting rejected. It's like pulling off a band-aid slowly to open such a letter.
