Re: Columbia c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
To those asking about non-named scholarships: Columbia distributes the love all around. Lots of $30-50K grants (3yr totals), a handful of $60 and $85K (just shy if the $87K butler). Lots of would-be butlers (3.8+/173+) will land $85K.
Its not entirely systematic with merit, and the need component is real. They won't officially match other schools, but if you express real interest and pitch an NYU, UChi, maybe Penn, or of course HYS offer, they will bite.

If someone gets a Butler can they still get non-named money? Or do they essentially just get what the 3.8/173s get (85kish total), but with a name to it?jbagelboy wrote:To those asking about non-named scholarships: Columbia distributes the love all around. Re: Columbia c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Alright, here is me reformulating the same basic theory for why a group of high numbered people are still in limbo. Since they need to determine special scholarship status on admission, I feel like it might make sense to create a pool that they basically run like the Yale admissions. Yale calls people with killer numbers and lets them in before the deadline, but they're the school that does not give advantages to early applicants in order, it seems, to super curate their classes. From looking around, that, among other things, seems to be their claim to fame. Maybe the interviews/stalled apps are trapped in this little experimental tidal pool that runs on a Yale like timetable...it seems like it would make sense from an admissions standpoint as getting a half or full ride scholarship is a pretty big distinction to make and might be treated in the way that the super hyper competitive prestige school has found to work the best. Still, same speculative idea reformulated...trying to get inside the heads of these cagey Columbians.

Thanks for the help jbagelboy! Question, if someone has say 120k from nyu or chicago would columbia ever increase on top of the butler?jbagelboy wrote:To those asking about non-named scholarships: Columbia distributes the love all around. I'm wondering the same thing. It probably depends on how much they want your stats, which makes me think that it might be situational. If they feel comfortable with their numbers, they might say no; if they feel that you in the average gives them an extra boost, they may bite.Gary wrote:Thanks for the help jbagelboy! Been complete since November. Is the theory that they're waiting to send offers with $$$ remotely valid? Or is that wishful thinking.

Re: Columbia c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
well, certainly wishful thinking. the only reason why I cling to it is because there seem to be too many people who should have heard back but didn't and Columbia graphs for years past are pretty solidly green above a certain level. if I didn't feel like I was good company, that there might be a certain pile they placed off to the side for one reason or another, then I'd be bracing for disappointment. still, maybe its not a solid group, I'm just assuming it is because that's the only way I can speculate about it. it is possible that the people in limbo are there for a variety of reasons unique to them and not because they're all being considered for offers, or yp, or as an april fools joke. the fact that they give out these scholarship just introduces three potential borderlines rather than just admit/don't admit, which could explain why a group of seemingly safe admits have taken noticeably longer.paglababa wrote:I thought I had it bad.bbkk wrote:About 40 days after submit, still at "Completion Pending."

Re: Columbia c/o 2017 Applicants (2013-2014 cycle)
Checked the mail yesterday and found a tri-fold Columbia Law pamphlet. Very run of the mill "we're Columbia, here's why we are great" with admissions information, information about field of studies, and contact information for admissions people. Only bizarre thing is the pamphlet has nothing asking me to apply or even mentioning the application process. I applied a while ago so I have no idea why I just got this now. Anyone else?
