I def feel like that when I say Yale or Harvard. Which is why I immediately follow it up with "but they're long shots."MAHamlin wrote:I guess that's what I'm getting at. Hate that. It either makes me sound pompous or I get the patronizing attitude like I don't know what's what.

At least I know I'm in good company. I always feel compelled to preface it with a "It's not going to happen, but I had to try for..." I've tried to make a case for myself once or twice with statistics as well, but I figure most people just think I'm talking out of my ass. Oh well...

Part of it for me is that I'm at a state school which is generously maybe 5th best in the state (and probably lower on the totem pole). The bar is set pretty fucking low. One of the reasons that I really want to get out of here.MAHamlin wrote:At least I know I'm in good company. let it be known that if i do miraculously get a JS1-->JS2 I will undoubtedly take out a billboard saying "IM GOIN TO HARVARD" or do it in skywriting over my place of work.

I'm right there with you. At best my school is the fourth ranked public university in my state. Throw private institutions in and it gets even worse.NoodleyOne wrote:Part of it for me is that I'm at a state school which is generously maybe 5th best in the state (and probably lower on the totem pole). I have to agree, the attitude of most students at this school can get pretty exhausting. Getting a C is succeeding for most...

I can't help but just be so proud of everyone who wants better for themselves. Why settle? (I know I sound sarcastic but 100% genuinely makes me happy)MAHamlin wrote:I'm right there with you. I'm not kidding, but a beauty pageant winning friend of mine seriously wants to tour ASWs with me and whenever I enter into a room she wants to be behind me yelling, VOTE FOR ELLE!!!!!!!! (her idea, not mine, surprisingly).

To Worm: I seriously can't wait to do the same thing at my CC. Harvard is not something that was on any of my classmates radar, but the faculty was very supportive and will be glad to know it worked.

Re: Harvard c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels weird telling people I've applied to Harvard. I usually lurk in the forum, but I can really relate to this sentiment.
None of the schools I've looked at have anyone in their most recent class from a WV undergrad (NYU, Harvard, UVa, and I think I looked at Berkeley's 2015 class info). Needless to say, I feel really awkward when I tell people about my acceptances/applications because people from my school at least are thrilled to get into WVU Law, and to say I'm trying to get into a school like Harvard (or any other highly ranked school) sounds kind of pompous. If I'm asked where I'm applying or what school I most hope accepts me, I follow it up with some awkward joke about being rejected. It's just not that common for people from my undergrad to go somewhere else...or to go to college period (WV has the lowest percentage of college educated people in the nation). Everyone, especially my professors, has been really supportitive, though.

I just tell people I am applying to schools in Boston, New York, Chicago, etc. And then they attempt to convince me that our state school with a 50% employment after graduation rate is really good.

You guys make me happy. I appreciate people who refuse to be complacent. I really do hope you all end up at Havrard so you can drop the H-bomb as much as you like, to people who won't bat an eye at it.
