I don't think one is really superior than the other, but I think the best pie can beat the best cake.

See, I think the best cake beats the best pie.

But the average pie will always beat the average cake. Since I typically eat average desserts, my answer must be pie.

Okay here's the deal. Cake is only good if it's chocolate. Any non-chocolate cake is awful and only makes you wish it were chocolate.

Whereas pie is as multifaceted as one's own imagination: you have the staples: apple, cherry, peach; specialties: pecan, pumpkin, Mississippi mud; hell, even savory varieties: shepherd's, pot, etc.

I think pie comes out the clear winner here.
