As for housing, just make sure you visit and look at the apartment. There are lots of scams, but they're pretty easy to pick out. As long as you do the transaction in person and never send money online and stuff ... you're good. Most people I know in SF get their apartments through craigslist. I've bought all sorts of random stuff off craigslist too (like the FitDesk I posted earlier).

Maybe CL in the Midwest is different. I dunno. What else do people use?

I've been using dedicated apartment-finder sites like apartments.com just to get a feel for what prices are like in different neighborhoods. I've never bought or sold anything on craigslist because there's not any recourse (that I know of?) for people who get scammed and I'm not particularly fond of the idea of meeting up with a potential creep/registered sex offender at a gas station and getting shanked up. Actually didn't know that there were housing ads on there, though, I'll start checking that out.

I actually live in a loft a few blocks from the Ventana, they are all relatively affordable. I also may be selling mine if I don't go to WUSTL, so if anyone is interested shoot me a PM.

Since I missed it earlier:

1) If scholarships don't come out until March, I'm going to be very sad.

2) I guess I'm alone ITT in thinking STL prices are actually a step up from my current living situation...

I actually got my current apartment for a song, but compared to other schools I'm considering, STL prices cannot be beat.

They are from mine too, but my undergrad is in the middle of VAST TRACTS of cornfields, and my roommates and I live like kings for $375/mo, utilities included. I seriously can't wait to go to school somewhere where there are more than 5 places to eat and 2 legit bars to go to.

+1 While not quite as bad where I am by a longshot, I definitely look forward to some of the amenities of a large metro area.

Nope. It's just a phrase. The SF apartment had a bit of story to it, but I just found this one through padmapper or something boring like that.

You can always get a mutt for free (although you have to be careful about their healthcare costs - mine came with a bazillion health problems, but I think he was unusually bad). How can you resist this? this may or may not be me shamelessly posting pics of my dog in a random thread
