They did a huge batch of holds/dings on the 13th. I think they'd wait for the deadline before making more big decisions.

Just to correct myself,
after you received a complete status update, you're suppose to get an email asking about scheduling interviews?
Is this only for ED?

uh..no.

1) HLS doesnt have ED

2) Only some (around 15%) of applicants get scheduled for an interview (KB1)...if you don't get one, you're screwed

3) Out of those with a KB1, 2/3 will get accepted.

Basically, only if HLS "likes" you will you get an interview...w/o an interview, you will not get accepted

Really? I'm sorry if this is obvious, I have applied to HLS but I have a feeling I won't get in (my LSAT is only 168) so I haven't paid as much attention to their admission process as to the other schools I am applying. I was seriously sure that they admitted a lot of applicants without interviews! So basically if you don't receive a KB1 you're sure not to get in?

They admit some people without KB1s but they are the exception and usually auto-admits. The only person I know, personally, that got into HLS without a KB1 also got into YLS and SLS. I think they might also take people off the waitlist without KB1s but that's probably not the ideal way to get in.

My status checker says app complete and then the day I got the email. It never said under review, it went from received to complete.

When does Harvard accept it's last applications?

This is my hypothesis: they're keeping some people in limbo waiting for the end of the cycle of applications. When that comes, then they will email out a bunch of KB1s to the people who haven't been held yet. But they're waiting just in case they get a bunch of 4.0/180 people before the end of the cycle.

At the same time, they are still considering people for holds that haven't gone past the 2 month wait, and it seems like the people that completed in Nov have been through the hold process. So they're probably determining hold/KB1/"unofficial hold until the cycle ends" status for people that completed after that (for the record, I URed 12/5, so I think I'm in this still-considering group).

This is all conjecture on my part, but it seems logical, especially if the submissions are fewer and weaker than in previous years. They don't want to give out KB1s to people before everyone has submitted, but they aren't going to hold them either if they think they want to give them KB1s.

Harvard did something similar last year, the only difference was that they didn't have a 3 week break. Two weeks after the deadline, they had a larger batch of KB1s. It looked like they had a schedule of Monday-kb2s, Wednesday-kb1s, Friday-rej/holds.

And honestly i think every school does this in some form, they hold on to some people to see the whole app pool...they may not send out a hold email like Harvard but they do the same thing

Maybe because of the smaller pool, more people are in play this year/Harvard's waiting to see before making a decision. Also seems like soft factors have been in play more, like work experience. Might be the "classic" autorejects fill those priorities? Not sure. Every time I hear someone that saw tea leaves about a smaller pool, though, it makes me smile.
